Be it known that we, ALFRED L. BARON and JAMES F. IIAFFEY, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Receptacles, of which the following is a cornplete specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of our invention is to produce improvements in that class of devices set forth in United States Letters Patent No. 547,657, issued October S, 1895, to the aforesaid Alfred L. Baron. In said patent it was stated that the object of the invention therein presented was in part to dispense with the use of solder in the manufacture of tops for receptacles; and it is the object of our present invention to provide means in tops of the description specified for more securely assembling the fixed and movable parts thereof. Accordingly the subjectmatter of this application may be defined generally as comprising improvementsin self-closing metallic caps for glass or other receptacles in which means for securely effecting operative c011- nect-ion between the movable part of said cap or the lid thereof and t-he fixed part that is fastened to the receptacle are provided.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a rear elevation of our topl detached from a receptacle. Fig. II is a bottom plan view thereof comprehending those elements which comprise our improvements. Fig. III is a section on the line III III of Fig. II. Fig. IV is a perspective View of the spoutand collar of the top detached.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a collar, 2 a spout, Aand 3 the lidsupporting rim, which may be assembled in their relative positions, as by reciprocally in-folded flanges 4. The flanges upon the parts 1 and 3 are annular, while that of the part 2 is segmental. The construction last described constitutes no part of our present invention and is referred to onlyincidentally.
The lid-supporting rim is in the form illustrated annular and has its upper part 5 of the cylindrical shape illustrated. 6 indicates a lid that preferably is shaped, as indicated at 8, to fit over the part 5 of the rim 3. The shape of the lid is a non-essential feature and susceptible of wide variation. The lid 6 and rim 25 are united by means similar to those shown in the patent above referred to, but with certain variations which constitute the gist of our present invention. As in the subject-matter of the patent, the means of uniting the lid and fixed part of the top consist of a pair of coiled springs 9 and 10, united by a medial loop 11 and provided 6o with projecting lateral terminals'12. The coils of the springs are seated in recesses in the part 5 of the rim 3, where they are retained by oppositely-projecting lugs 14 and 15, which enter the ends of the respective coils. For retaining the loop 11 we provide, as by forming a slit 16, a strip 17. The means for securing the coiled springs to the rim 3, so far as above specified, are the same as those set forth in the previous pat- 7o ent. The improvement consists in providing upon the strip 17 a tongue 18, which fits between the coils, and besides holding them in firm position upon their lugs 14 and 15 closes the space between them, thereby serving to exclude insects and dust from the interior of the receptacle.
In manufacture the rim, with its lugs let and 15, -strip 17, and tongue 18, is formed out of sheet metal,'as by stamping. When the 8o springs are to` be inserted, the tongue 18 is bent ont of the way of the springs, and after they are inserted into position is bent back into its place between them. The lugs 14: and 15 are carried upon the part 5 of the rim 3, 85 so that byimparting to the part 5 a cylindrical shape the lugs not only stand in the same vertical plane, but serve to bring `the springs Well underneath the lid 6. The object in bringing the springs underneath the cap is 9o to provide room for them in front of the tailpiece 20 of the lid 6, which, as shown in the former patent, rested upon the springs. By this construction, together with the employment of the tongue 18, the connection between the lid 6 and rim 3 is rendered close and insect-proof.
The terminals 12 of the springs are passed through apertures 21 in the lid, of which one is shown in Fig. III of the drawings, and be- 10o ing respectively passed through apertures 22 in the tailpiece are bent inwardly, so as to clenc-h the ends of the terminals and firmly secure the lid in proper relative position to the rim 3.

In a receptacletop, the combination with a iiXed part, comprising a rim provided with recesses and oppositely-disposed lugs, of a lid and means for uniting the lid to the fixed part consisting of a pair of spiral springs mounted, upon said lugs respectively, Within the recesses in the rim, a tongue separating the springs, and means for operatively uniting the springs to the lid and fixed part respectively, suhstantially as set forth.
3. Inareceptacle-top the combination with a fixed part, including a rim, of a lid provided with atailpiece, and a spiral spring operatively uniting the lid and the fixed part, i
said spiral spring being secured to the rim and lid, respectively, and located underneath the lid and in front of the tailpiece in such a manner as to permit the front part of the tailpiece to extend lower than the top of the spring, and so form a close union of the parts.
4. In a receptacle-top,the combination with a fixed part, comprising a rim providedwith recesses, oppositelyprojecting lugs, a slit-dened strip, and a tongue thereon, of a pair of spiral springs united by a loop and provided with lateral terminals, said springs being secured upon the respective lugs upon opposite sides of the tongue, and their loops confined within the slit that defines the strip, and a lid operatively secured to the terminals of the springs, for the purpose specified.
