FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.
SPECIFILTN forming pal't Of Lei/CSIS Patent NO. 677,733, dated July 2, 1901.
i Application filed March 2, 1901. Serial Ne 49,599- (NO mOClGL) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMEONL. BRAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in thecounty of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Fruit-J ar Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding or clamping fruit jars or cans while placing the screw-cap thereon; and the object is to provide a device of simple construction that will tightly hold a jar while sealing the same and obviating the touching of the hot jar with a persons hands, and, further, to so arrange the device that it can be colnpactly folded when not in use.
I will describe a fruit-jar holder embodying my invention and then point outthe novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jarholdei embodyingmy invention and showing a jar engaged therewith. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in elevation and partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a view ofthe device folded.
The device comprises a base 1, with which a post 2 has swinging or hinged connection. AdaptedV for swinging connection with the upper end of the post 2 is a clamping-lever 3. This clamping-lever is provided with a hinge-section 4, that may be engaged with a hinge-section 5 on the upper end of the post by means of a removable pintle 6. Instead of using the hinge-sections, as shown, the pintle may be passed through perforations 7 in the extended rear portions 8 of the lever, which embrace the sides of .the post, and through an opening 9 near the top of the post. When fruit jars or cans, however, are to be clamped, the hinge-section 4 of the lever ymay be engaged with eyes 10 on the inner side of the post by means of the pintle 6; but when the clamping-lever is in its lowered position the pintle may be passed through the opening 7 and through an opening 11 in the post. The clamping-lever is provided with an opening 12, through which the neck of the jar may pass, and preferably this opening 12 has a packing 13, of rubber or the like, engaged with its wall, so as to prevent any possible damage to the jar when the lever is forced tightly down thereon, and a cushion 14, of rubber or the like, may be placed upon the platform 1, forming a yielding base or rest for the jar or can.
In operation the jar is to be placed upon the cushion 14 and then the lever S-moved downward, engaging around the neck of the bottle and bearing upon the upper end of the body or upon the base of the neck, as plainly indicated in the drawings. By a slight pressure on the outer end of the lever the jar will be tightly clamped and held so that the screwcap 15 may be screwed thereon bya suitable tool-such, for instance, as the clamping device 16.
While I have described the device as particularly adapted for holding hot jars and preventing the contact of a persons fingers therewith, it is obvious that it may be used in removing caps or covers when said caps or covers become so attached to a rubber ring or packing that they are difficult to remove.
The post 2 will be held in its vertical position by any suitable means. I have here shown a hook 17 as attached to the post and adapted to engage with an eye 18 on the end of the post. Vhen the device is not in use, it may be compactly folded, as indicated in Fig. 3, and hung upon a hook or nail by passing said hook or nail through the eye 18.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-e 1. A jar-holder, comprising a base, a post mounted thereon, and a clamping-lever having swinging connection with the post and provided with an opening to receive the neck of a jar, substantially as specified.
2. A jar-holder, comprising a base, a post having hinged connection therewith, and a clam ping.- lever having hinged connection with the upper end of the post, the said clamping-lever having an opening through it to receive the neck of a jar, substantially as specifled.
3. A jar-holder, comprising a base, a post having hinged connection therewith, a clamping-lever having hinged connection with the IOO upper portion of the post, the said lever having an opening to receive the neck of a jar, and a packing on the Wall of said opening, substantially as specified.
4. A fruit-jar clamp, comprising a base, a post having,` swinging connection therewith, a hinge-section on the upper end of said post, a clamping-lever having an opening to receive the neck of a jar, a hinge-section on said clamping-lever, a removable pintle for engaging with the two hinge-sections, and eyes on the inner side of the post to which the hinge-section on the lever may be attached by the pintle, substantially as specified.
