-WILLIAM P. ALLRED, OF CORYDON, IOWA.
PORTABLE BOOK-SUPPORT.
SEECIFICA'IION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 677 ,7 31, dated July 2, 1901.
Application filed April 15,1901.
To 510% whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. ALLRED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corydon, in the county of \Vayne and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Portable Book-Support, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to facilitate the labor of making records in a book by means of pen and ink.
Heretofore various forms of book-supports have been provided for retaining books in inor examining records; but in no instance has a self-adjusting book-support been provided that will automatically raise and lower and level the pages of a book at any point where the book is opened, as contemplated by my invention.
My book holder and leveler is composed of a portable base, a crank-shaft and rollers, and an adjustable hand or arm rest, as hereand illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device ready for supporting and leveling an open book as required to retain the open pages in a convenient position for a person to write thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detachable arm-rest in an inverted position. Fig. 3 shows the rear side of the book-support and the elevated end of an open record-book supported thereon advanta geously for the purpose of making records on the open pages or examining the contents previously entered.
The base of the book-support is preferably a skeleton frame of quadrangular form twenty-four inches long and eighteen inches wide and specially adapted for use in countyrecorders offices. It is obvious, however, that it may be a solid base and vary in size as desired to suit books of dilferent sizes.
The letters A and A designate the straight wooden end bars of the frame, and B and 13 two mating bars in parallel position at the central portion of the frame. These four bars are rigidly connected by mortises and tenons or in any suitable Way, with a side bar 0 at their rear ends that is uniform in thickness therewith. The other side bar or front bar D is set on edge and fixed to the ends of Serial No. 55,928. (No model.)
the bars A, A B, and B so that its top edge will be elevated about one inch from the top of the frame.
Shaft-bearers H are fixed on the tops and rear end portions of the bars A, A B, and B and in alinement with each other to support a rock-shaft J,mounted on said bearings. The cranks J and J of the shaft project in reverse ways from the axis of the shaft and are extended in length to correspond with the length of the rollers K and K mounted thereon. A detachable arm-support,consisting of a flat board M, provided with fixed triangular-shaped brackets N and fixed dowelpins 1' on its under side, is adapted to be detachably fastened to the front side bar D by simply inserting the dowel-pins in perforations r in said bar, so that the arm-support can be readily shifted relative to the side of the book on the support upon which a record is to be made or examined while the book is open. The ends of the rollers are designed to alternately engage the top surfaces of the parallel bars of the base above which they rotate whenever one side of a book on the rollers is lowered to its downward limit and the other side is elevated.
It is obvious the rollers can be dispensed with, so that a book can be supported and leveled while resting upon the cranks J and J 2 direct, or in place of rollers extending the entire lengths of the cranks short rollers or disks may be mounted at each end of each book is opened to any page desired to be examined or to be held in a favorable position for writing thereon.
Having thus described the purpose, construction, and operation of my invention, its practical utility will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent therefor, is-- 1. In a book support and leveler, a base, a rock-shaft having cranks projected in reverse ways from its axis mounted upon bearers, bearers fixed to a base, to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
2. Abook-supportandbook-leveler consisting of a base having a fixed bar projecting above its front edge to engage the end of a book, bearers fixed to the rear edge portion of the base to support a rock-shaft having cranks that extend in reverse Ways from the axis of the shaft and rollers on the cranks, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated. 7
3. A book support and leveler comprising a portable base, a bar fixed on top of the front edge of the base'to engage the end of a book, bearers fixed in alinement With each other on top of the rear edge portion of the base to support a rook-shaft, a rock-shaft having two cranks projecting in reverse Ways from the axis of the shaft and rollers on the cranks and the shaft mounted on said bearers and an arm-rest attached to the front edge of the base, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
