GEORGE E. WOODBURY, OF EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent llTo. 67,623. dated August 6, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLANING MACHINES.
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WOODBURY, of East Cambridge, in the county yoi' Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following te be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a. planingrmachine with my improvements.
Figure 2 represents a. longitudinal vertical section of the same,
Similar letters of reference indicate the 'same parts in the several figures.
My invention is designed as an improvement upon a machine for which a patent was granted te Ii. Snow, on November 2l., 1854, and also to James A. Woodbury, on June 8, 1858. v
The object of my invention is to insure the perfect adjustment ofthe mouth-piece to the thickness or width of the board or plank being operated upon relatively to the cutting edge ofthe rotating knives; and the invention consists 'in so attaching the frame which carries the mouth-piece to the adjustable frame of the machine as that the edge ofthe mouth-piece will always adjust itself to the line of cut, or the cutting edges ofthe knives, during the passage of a. thicker or thinner plank or board through the machine.
The difficulty heretofore experienced in adjusting the mouth-piece consisted in arranging its centre of motion in relation to the cutting edges of the knives, so as to cause the plank or board tobecome in a measure wedged between the mouth-piece and bed, and to render it difcult to feed, thus requiring the machine to be strongly and expensively made in order to withstand the consequent great amount of strain occasioned by the same, and also requiring a greater amount of power to run the machine.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. I
Figs. 1 and 2, a represents the bed-piece; b b are standards which sustain the frame c, in which the cuttinghead is journalled. The frame c is designed to be adjustable in height to suit the various thicknesses of lumber. d d d represent the cutters fixed to the shaft or cylinder e made in the usual form. f represents the mouthpiece, made in the form shown in the drawings, and hung or pivoted to the frame t, the centre of motion of the latter being on a line with the edge of the mouth-piecefas'will appear in tig. 2. The front part of the frame t is provided on each side with two pins or lugs which project through slots k k made in a xed portion of the adjustable frame c. These slots .may be lmade either curved or straight, and they are arranged in relation toV each other in such a manner as that in the movement of the frame t (the motion imparted to the edge ofthe mouth-piece) the latter will move on the line of an ellipse within a certain range approximately near the line of cut of the knives. Ii' these slots are straight, the distances from the edge of the mouth-,piece to the nearest pivot representing half the minor axis of anellipse, that to the further pivot half the major axis, the former pivot moving en the supposed major, the latter on the supposed minor axis, will cause the edge of the mouthpiece to move in the curved line of an ellipse. If lthese slots are to be curved, the construction will be the same, with the addition that the pivots mm'e a certain xed distance from those points respectively which i indicate the length of the two axes oi" the ellipse.
What I claim as my inventioinand desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
Adjusting the moutlrpieccf of a planing machine, iin relation to the edges of the cutters, by attaching the former to a movable frame, It, whic'h is hung or pivoted so as to operate substantially in, the manner and for the purpose specified. A
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
