TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HILER, of Branchport, in the county of Yates, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Carriers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in whioh- Figure 1 is a birds-eye view.

Figure 2 is an end view, showing the side of the straw-carrier.

The letters of reference refer to the same parts in each figure.

The nature of my invention consists in making a straw-carrier to be attached to any thresher and cleaner in such ananner that the straw may be carried in the direction of the machine, or to the right or left of the thresher and cleaner for the purpose of storing the straw in the barn, if necessary, or carry it to a stack forward or either side of the thresher, and making the carrier adjustable, so that it will carry the straw over or under the timbers of the beam that might otherwise be in the way of the delivery of the straw-carrier.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its mode of construction and operation,

A is a rear section of the thresher and cleaner of any ordinary construction, and is provided with the ordi- Tmry grain-belts, chaff-belts, conveyers, and cleaning apparatus. The rear end is made in such manner that the straw-carrier may be attached to it, so as to carry the straw to the right or left, or forward and upward in the line ofthe direction of the thresher. When the thresher is used while upon a wagon, as is usually done, the strawcarrier may be adjusted to elevate to any desired height. At the bottom or sills of the thresher there are loops or other devices to hold the support for the straw-carrier, so that the support may be taken from one side and placed and fastened to the other side, when the straw-carrier is changed to deliver at the other Iside. B is the straw-carrier; it is made in any ordinary manner that will admit being driven by the mechanism represented in the drawings, and allow it to he applied to the thresher in either position, and be held to the same in any convenient met-holler with any desirable fastenings. There are so many devices thatmay be used to fasten it that it is unnecessary to designate anyparticular kind. The carrier is driven by the belt C, that communicates with the other part of the thresher. The power of this belt is transmitted through the roller D to the belt E and pulley F. The arrangement of all these parts may be varied, if desired, so as to suit any kind of thresher thatthe carrier may be applied to, but these do not require to he changed when the direction of the carrier is changed. G is a mitrc-wheeh'it is fastened to the same axle as the pulley F, by which it is driven. This wheel drives the mitre-wheel H. This wheel is fastened to an axle that extends through the straw-carrier from side to side, and has the mitre-wheel J fastened at the other end. The wheel G drives the grooved wheels on the same axis. Around one of these grooved wheels at small chain is applied that extends around the grooved wheel I, that is fastened to the axle of a roller that carries the strawvbelt. A belt may be used in place of this chain, if preferred, This arrangement is used when the straw is to be carried to the left of tho thresher, as represented in fig. 1. When the straw is to he delivered at the right of the thresher, then the other side of'the carrier is fastened to the thrcsher, and the wheels J and K come together, and the wheel K drives the wheel J, and thus the wheel I and rolier and straw-belt, as before specified. When the straw is to be carried in direction of the threshcr the lower end of the carrier is fastened to the thresher, and the other end supported by legs in the ordinary manner. Then the straw-earricr is driven by means of a chain or belt that passes around the grooved wheel that is on the same axle as the pulley F, and extends around the grooved pulley that is on the same axle as the wheel H, and by it m tion is given to the wheel H and thus to the straw-belt, before mentioned.

I claim the straw-carrier B, when made and applied to a thresher and cleaner with its adjustable and reversible devices by tlienrrangement of the wheels Gr, H, J, and K, with the nxles and grooved pulleys that actuate the straw-carrier in cmnhin-ition, substantially as herein specified and for the purpose set forth.
