TUG-BUCKLE.
s'PEcIEIcATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,1 13, date-a May 28, 1901. Application inea May 19, 190e. serial No. 17,202. (No man.)
To @ZZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES SELKIRK, acitiz'en of the United States, and a resident of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tug-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple economical clamp buckles for the union of tugs and llame-billets, as well as to facilitate separation of said tugs and billets.
It therefore consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed. Y
Figure l of the drawings illustrates a union of a tug and hame-billet by a buckle in accordance with my invention, certain of the parts being broken and in horizontal section; and Fig. 2, a side elevation of the aforesaid assemblage of parts, a portion of the tug and buckle being broken.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents each of a pair of parallel upper and lower bars having offset forward ends b, connected by a chape B, the other ends of the bars being integral with a cross-plate O, that opposes the inner side of a tug I, this plate being provided with forward edge notches c adjacent to said bars.
The frame, comprising the bars A, chape B, and plate O, constitutes one section of my improved buckle, and said frame is shown as having the upper and lower bars thereof provided with strap-loops d, common to other tug-buckles, but which are not always necessary. Hence they may be omitted without departure from my invention. The buckle embodies ahother section, comprising a transverse forward end plate D, that opposes the outer side of tug I, a stiff tongue E, extending inward from the plate, central of same, and a pair of rearwardly-extending recurved parallel upper and lower bars F, that are inwardly offset from said plate and for the most part inclined from the plane of the inner side of said tug when the tongue is engaged therewith. A transverse rear plate G connects the recurved extremities of the bars F outside of tug I, and the latter plate is provided with an outturned lip extension f, constituting a handle.
A name-billet H is connected in the usual manner to the chape B of the buckle, and the width of the tongue-section of said buckle is such that its parallel bars F come inside the bars A of the chape-section.
The buckle-sections are engaged and the tongue-section moved forward to catch crossplate C of the chape-section in the bends of bars F, after which said tongue-section is tilted, the notches cin said cross-plate aording the clearance necessary to bring tongue E out of the way of the tug I, inserted back of the tongue-section plates D Gr, between them and the plate C of the chape-section of the buckle. An aperture in the tug having been brought into register with tongue E of the buckle and engaged by this tongue said tug and tongue-section of the buckle are drawn back to clamp the said tug between the plates O and D G of the buckle, owing to the inclination of the side bars F aforesaid when the tongue is in working position. 'Io unbuckle, the tug is moved forward to bring the bend of the side bars F of the tonguesection of the buckle against the plate C of the chape-section, this plate then serving as a fulcrum upon which to tilt said tongue-section of the buckle by depressing its rear lip extension f, that is normally offset from said tug.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tug-buckle comprising two sections one of which consists of apair of parallel upper and lower bars having offset forward ends connected by a chape, and a cross-piece connecting the rear ends of said bars, to oppose the inner side of a tug, the other section of the buckle being sufficiently narrow to have sliding engagement with the one aforesaid and consisting of a pair of opposite end plates that extend crosswise of the tug outside the same, recurved parallel upper and lower bars c011- nectin g the plates, the bends of these'bars being adjacent to the rearmost of said pair of plates,
and e tug-engaging tongue extending inward have hereunto set my hand, at Janesville, in from the forward one of the aforesaid pair the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, of plates, said bars of the latter buckle-secin the presence of two Witnesses.
tion being in inclined opposition to the rear J AMES SELKIRK. 5 cross-piece of the chape-section of the buckle Vitnesses:
when said tongue is in Working position. E. H. WINNEY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I IIARRIET E. CARPENTER.
