Zo atl whom t may concern:
L it known Vthat I, .Moon F. OBERLE, a ciiirleo of the United States, and a resident of New iorlr, in 'the county of New lYork andV .5t-:rte New lYork, neve 'made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smolre-l'ouses, of which tlie'fcilowing is a speciicatiou.
My invention relates to an iinpiovementn smoke-houses designed for the purpose ofv smoking meats, end-more particularly to im` provcments'in such structures used in the basements of houses or other buildings. As is Well known, in many large cities these smoke-houses are bui t in basements or cellars of tenement-houses, and in such instances great objections have been urged against the same by reason of the escape of the smoke into the house or building when the door of the smoke-house is opened to allow a person to enter .or issue therefrom. The object of my invention is to overcome this objection and to ineke certain additions to the smoke-house to prevent the egress of smoke into the cellar or basement; and with these and other ends in view it consists in certain novel features o' construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fuily described, and pointed out in the claims.
"-he accompenying,l drawing represents in section aportion of a building or tenementhouse with a smoke-bouse located in' the oel-, lar or basement thereof and with my improve-l ments applied. thereto,
Referring to the drawing, A represents a wah of a building or tenement-house; B, sev- .erai iioors thereof; C, the chimney or line, and D the basement or cellar in which is 1ocsted the smoireehouse. This smoke-house consists of the rear wall-2, front wall 3, side wall 4, and roof 5, one side wall of course be ing omittedfrom the drawing, the latter being shownin section. .In the front of the" smoke-house is an opening 6, to be closed by n. door 7 of ordinary construction, and in one of the side walls is a hole or opening 8 for the. purpose of admitting` air for the sake of combustion, the iire, as usual, being placed onV the iioori, made of cement, bricks, or other From the smoke-house lends the iiue 10, connecting with the chimney or stack .lar D.
C. In front of this smoke-house I construct a vestibule 11, preferably formed of iron or sheet metal, although, of course, the same may-he huilt of bricks or masonry-Work, and 55 preferablyiextending from the Iloor 12 of the celiar or basement to the roof thereof and extending tlie width of the smoke-house. In the front of this vestibule is located -a door 13, below whichis an opening 14 for the in-V 6o gross of air at all times to the interior of the vestibule il, the 'opening 15 into the vestibule being provided for the admission of the workmen and adapted to lbe closed by the door 13. From the top of the vestibule 11.65
leads a due 16, passing' over the top of the l smoke-house and leading into the stack or chimney C, the purpose and effect of this construction and arrangement of parts being 1i, through thc'iine 16, and out through the iiue C at all times, and thereby suck or draw any smoke which mayiind its way into the vestibule 1,1 out through the stack C. 'In the Vto provide a draft of air through the openingvlgo roof of the smoke-house I forman opening '15 1'?, adopted to be opened'and closed by the door or damper 18, to which isconneeted a.' chain 19, the latter being also connected with the door 13 of the vestibule in such way that when' said door 13 of. the vestibule is opened 8c unerstooa niet 85 out through the fine 16 and chimney C,and 9o any smoke which issues from the smokehouse into the vestibule when the door 7 is opened will pass out through said flue 16 and chimney-C, the door 18 beingsiinultaneously raised with the door l-and allowing o. portion of the 9,5
smoke in seid smoke-house to escape through the flue 16 and out through the chimney C, thereby preventing any smoke from the smoke-house issuing into the basement or cel Having fully described my invention, whatl I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a smoke -house and chimney or .stack leading,` therefrom, of a vestibule l1 located in front of said smokehouse and into which leads a door from Said latter, a lue 1G located above said smokehouse and communicating at; one end with Said chimney or stack and ab its opposie end with he upper portion of said vestibule ll, a door 13 leading into said vestibule and an opening 14 in the lower portion of said vesti bule whereby a draft is created through said vestibule and over the top of'said smokehouse for the purpose of carryingo through said stack or chimney, any smoke escaping from said smoke-house into said vestibule, Substantially as described.
