Be it known that l, FORREST M. KREITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bethlehem, in Jthe county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car Couplers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in car-couplers; and its primary object is to provide acou pler of the Janney type having means whereby the knuckle thereof will be automatically locked in its closed position.

A further object is to so construct the device that the parts may be readily unlocked for the purpose of uncoupling.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a draw-head having a recess therein, within which is pivoted a dog, which is connected, by means of links, to the knuckle of the coupler at a point adjacent to the pivot thereof. Means are provided whereby the dog may be drawn automaticallyout of engagement with the kn uckle.

The invention also consists in providing means of peculiar construction whereby sudden jarring of the coupling will be prevented.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my inveution, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Referring to said gures by numerals of reference, l 1 are guides secured to the bottom of the carand between which is slidaloly mounted a shank 2 and draw-head 3. Secured to this shank at a point adjacent to the draw-head is a block 4, which is slidably mounted between the guides and bears upon coil-springs 5, which inclose guiderods 6, eX- tending longitudinally between the guides l. These rods extend through fixed blocks 6, secured between the guides, and the springs 5 are adapted to bear thereon and limit the backward movement of the block 4 and the draw-head. End blocks 61 are secured to the Fig. 3 is a sec-V rods 6 in rear of blocks 6, and coil-springs Gc are mounted upon the rods at points hetween the blocks 6 and 6b and are adapted to limit the forward movement of the drawhead. The draw-head is recessed in its front head, as at 7, and within this recess is pivoted a dog 8, having a shoulder 9 thereto which is adapted to contact with the wall-of the recess and limit the outward movement of said dog.

Pivotally mounted within an arm 10 of the draw-head is a knuckle 1l, of ordinary form, the inner toe 12 of which is adapted to extend into the recess 7 when said knuckle is in closed position. Links 13 and 14 connect the toe of the dog 8 with the knuckle ll, said links being secured to the knuckle at a point adjacent to the pivot thereof. Chains l5 are secured to the dog at a point adjacent to the toe thereof, and these chains extend from apertures 16 formed within the rear of the draw-head at opposite sides thereof, and are for the purpose of withdrawing the dog out of engagement with the knuckle. When it is desired to unlock the knuckle l1, the dog S is drawn inwardly and will cause the toe of said knuckle to swing laterally upon its pivot until the links 13 and 14 are brought into alinement. The knuckle will then be free to swing outward into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and this movement thereof will force the dog 8 into the recess, as shown in dotted lines in said figure.

In coupling, the knuckle 11 will be forced inward, and such movement will swing the dog outward, motion being imparted thereto from the knuckle through the links 13 and 14. The links are of such length as to permit the toe of the knuckle to escape the toe of the dog; but as the inward movement thereof continues the dog will be drawn out to the limit of its movement and in the path of the toe of the knuckle. The said knuckle will thus be securely locked in position and cannot be swung outward until the dog is drawn back out of engagement therewith.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred forni of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination with a draw-head having a recess therein; of a knuckle pivoted to the drawhead, a horizontally-movable dog pivoted within the recess, said dog engaging the toe ofthe knuckle and having a shoulder adapted to abut against the inner Wall of said recess and limit the outward movement thereof, links connecting the knuckle and dog, and means for retracting the dog from either side of the car. 2. The combination with a draw-head having a recess therein; of a knuckle pivoted to the draw-head, a horizontally-movable dog pivoted within the recess, said dog engaging the toe of the knuckle and having a shoulder adapted to abut against the inner wall of' said recess and limit the outward movement thereof, a link attached to the dog, a second link attached to the knuckle at a point adjacent to the pivot thereof, said links being connected at their adjacent ends and being adapted, when the knuckle is swung inward, to draw the dog into the path of the toe of the knuckle.
