Description

Letters Patent No. 67,399, dated August 6, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN TUYERES.
die Stlgrhnle rrfrmh tu in that rttrrs ntrnt mit making putt uf the sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. W. BALL, of Charlestown, in the county of Coles, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuyeres; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in providing a passage downward through the centre of the tuyeres, for the escape of cindcrs and dust from above, andthe admission of air from below, and as a safety-valve to prevent the explosion of the bellows, .and also to provide insideof the tuyeres a simple and durable means of regulating the force of the blast.
In the drawings A represents the pipe leading from the bellows to the tuycres; B is the-upper plate, and C the lower plate, which, being fastened together by bolts at the flanges b c, form the outer parts ofmy instrument. These plates are ofthe form shown in accompanying drawing, and when j oined together resemble two wash-bowls or soup-plates placed face to face and bolted through their rims. Through the bottom plate is a small aperture, D, closed by a valve, d, which .opens upward into the tuyeres. I prefer the form of valve shown in my drawings, namely, a small dat strip of iron resting on pivots d d', its short arm closing down upon a ledge, z, in the edge of the apertureD, and its longer and heavier arm projecting below the instrument, in order that the valve may always be open unless closed by the force of the blast through the blast pipe A. E is a hat-shaped disk resting upon its brim upon projections fff from the inner surface of the plate C, and having a square hole, c, in its crown directly over and of equal size with the aperture D in the bottom plate. Around the brim or ange of the circular disk E is a series of holes, e e e, through which the air passes from the blast pipe to the furnace. F is an aperture in the upper plate B, communicating directly with the interior of the furnace. The under side of the flange of the disk E, at the edge of the ange, is provided withal series of steps, e e e', three or more in number, corresponding to the number of the projectionsfff on the inside of the plate C. By means of the steps e e e and the corresponding' projectionsfff the disk may be ra'ised or lowered by simply turning it round, for when the depressions between the steps e e e rest on the projectionsfff, the disk will occupy a lower position in the tuyeres than when the steps lthemselves rest on the projections. The disk may be readily turned by means of a square rod or poker inserted for the purpose into the hole in its centre by the operator. When the disk occupies a low position in the tuyeres there is a space between the holes e e e and the flange of the upper plate B, 'which permits the free passage bf .the air from theY bellows to the furnace. When the disk E is raised its iange approaches and finally comes in contact with the flange of the plate B, cutting oii` the passage of the air through the holes e e e.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. I claim the combination of the blast tube A, valve d, and air-chamber, all constructed and arranged as described. i
2. The disk E, having the steps e e e operating in connection with the projectionsfff on the inner surface of the plate C, and having theseries of holes around its margin and the square central aperture c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
-To the above specication of my improvement I have signed my hand this 20th of April, 1867.
W. W. BALL.
