Description

the object of thessame is to devise a clamp one on hitching-ropes, hammocks, 850.
JAMES A. LAWLER, OF
PATENT OFFIC RUSHVILLE, ILLINOIS.
ROPE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Appliuationfiled January 23, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. LAWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bush ville, in the county of Schuyler and' ate'of Illinois, haveinvented new and usefli provements in Rope-Clamps, of which lowing is a specification. I
My invention relates torope-clamps; which carpbe used as a permanent one on bridles, Halters, or the like or as a detachable With this object in view I have designed the simple and novel construction fully described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is aplan view of a blank stamped out for making my clamps. Fig. 2illustrates one of my clamps and amethod of using it on a hitching-rope. Fig. 3 illustrates one of my clamps used to permanently secure two members of the headstall of a bridle.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
In making my clamps I take a piece of sheet metal 1, trapezoidal in form, and stamp. or cut it out in the form shown in Fig. 1, with three tongues 2 on each of the converging sides 3. These tongues 2 are next bent around, forming hooks or claws 4, the center tongue being curved oppositely from the outside ones. In securing a rope by means of this clamp the rope is engaged on one of the outer claws 4 and thenpassedthrough under the center one and then' engaged by the other outside one. If it is desired to make the fastening permanent, the claws 4 maybe closed down with a hammer, as in Fig. 3; but if it is to be detachable theclaws are left open. In practice I preferto make the center claw a little shorter than the two outside ones,
Patent No. 673,658, dated May '7, 1901.

thereby enabling thepoint rope, and thus hold it fr om slippifig." trapezoidal "form gi v'the'blank 1 enables this clamp 4 r "s where the hitching-rope is'passed nda post 9, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby I ping theclamp from being spread out and disengaged by a strong pull. I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A rope-clamp, having three tongues on each of two opposite sides, said tongues being curved to form claws, the middle claws being curved oppositely to the two companion outside claws, substantially as described.
2. A rope-clamp, comprising a metal plate having two opposite nomparallel or converg ing sides, each of said sides having three tongues thereon bent to form claws, the middle claws being curved oppositely from the outside claws, substantially as described.
3. A rope-clamp, comprising a metal plate having threetongues on each of two opposite sides, said tongues being bent to form'claws and the middle one of said claws being oppositely curved and shorter than the other two and-constructed to bite into the rope, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES A. LAWLER.
