BAYONET.
(Applica fion filed Jan. 14, 1901.)
(No Model.)
I mrz/vrozz,
1 77. l). Mal/794v. A w TTKY,
22% M a m IJIVY DICK MURPHY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ON THIRD TO CHARLES E. MCOLURE, OF SAME PLACE.
BAYONET.
SPECIFICATION fanning part of Letters Patent No. 673,527, dated May 7, 1901. Application filed January 14, 1901. Serial No. 43,258. (No model.)
To zfll whom, it 71mg; concern:
Be it known that 1, Lin DICK MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of. Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bayonets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bayonets and improved means for securing the bayonet to'the muzzle of a firearm; and the object of my invention is to produce a disappearing bayonet which maybe quickly and easily'withdrawn into a recess under the muzzle and which will be invisible when inthat position and having no unsightly projections either when so withdrawn or in use.
With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichi I Figure 'l is-a side elevation of the muzzle ofa rifle provided with a bayonet in extended position constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the muzzle, the bayonet being retracted. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the bayonet partly extended. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on a line a b of Fig. 1.
In the fore-stock 2, just below the barrel 3, I form a longitudinal groove of sufficient length to receive the bayonet 4:. The bayonet is approximately triangular in cross-sec tion and is concaved on its face adjacent to the barrel, as shown in Fig. 4:.
The means for extending or withdrawing the bayonet comprises a cross-key 5, passing. through a slot in the bayonet, and a slidable band or sleeve 6,embracing the fore-stock and barrel. The ends of the key 5 extend, respectively, through two longitudinal slots 7,
formed in the fore-stock just below the lowest part of the barrel 3. The extreme ends of the key 5 lie in slots in the band (5. One end of'the key is provided with a head 8, by which the key may be removed from the forestock when it is necessary to remove the bayonet entirely.
When the bayonet is extended, as shown in Fig. 1, it is held in that position by two springdetents 9, which are secured'to opposite sides of the fore-stock 2 and have shoulders which engage the rear edge of the sleeve 6. The bayonet is withdrawn by pressing the detents .9 inwardly or together with the thumb and finger and sliding the sleeve 6 back to the position shown in Fig. 2. V
10 designates a ramrod, and'12 designates a band embracing the end of the rainrod and the muzzle of the rifle.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a firearm, the combination'of the stock having alongitudinal recess therein adjacent 6 to the muzzle, and having a longitudinal slot therein, opening into said recess, a bayonet sheathed in said recess, and a transverse key passing through the butt of the bayonet and through said slot; substantially as described.
2. In a firearm, the combination'of the stock having a longitudinal recess therein adjacent to the muzzle and having a longitudinal slot therein opening into said recess, a bayonet sheathed in said recess,a transverse key pass- 7 5 ing through the butt of the bayonet and pro jccting through said slot, and a slidable sleeve or band embracing the stock and muzzle and having a slot therein for the end of said key,
whereby moving said sleeve moves the bayonet, substantially as described.
3. In a firearimthe combination of the stock having a longitudinal recess therein adjacent to the muzzle, and having a longitudinal slot therein opening into said recess, a bayonet sheathed in said reccss,a transverse key passing through the butt of the bayonet and extending through said slot, a slid-able sleeve or band embracing the muzzle and stock and having a key, and a spring-detent secured to the stock for locking said sleeve and the bayonet in ex tended position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LIVY DICK MURPHY.
