My invention is a rifle cleaning rod adapted to clean the dirt and the products from the firing out of the grooves in the rifling.

An object of my invention is'the construction of a rifle cleaning rod having a resilient prong or the like connected to the rod and forced into the grooves of the rifiing and thereby cutting the deposits from the firing of the gun, this prong acting with a chisel like action.

Another object of my invention is the construction of a rifle cleaning rod with a curved leading edge so that the main portion of the rod will ride on the lands of the rifling and that the prong projecting from the opposite side of the rod will be forcibly thrust into a groove and follow such groove in the longitudinal thrusting of the rod into the bore of a gun.

My invention, in its various aspects, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is the longitudinal section through the barrel of a rifle showing my cleaning rod in operative position.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cleaning rod, showing a detachable construction.

Fig. 3 is a plan of the rod of Fig. 2, taken in the direction of the arrow 3.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a continuous rod and having a barbed end to attach a swab.

In the drawings the rifle barrel is designated by the numeral 11, having a series of helical grooves 12, with lands 13 between the grooves, this being the usual construction of rifling, the grooves however being sometimes of different widths and different depths, and it is to be understood that the cutting part of the cleaning rod may be formed in accordance with the particular rifling to be cleaned.

The cleaning rod is designated generally by the numeral 14, and has a projecting end 15 with an upwardly turned curve 16 at the point. The surface 17 is substantially a diametrical surface. Set back from the end there is a projecting prong 18, this being ofthe rod. The prong has a square end 21, giving a type of chisel point 22. The side edges 23 of the prong are also tapered toward the point as indicated in Fig. 3, such point being of the proper size to' fit in a groove in the rifle, 1

Inthe construction of Figsa2 and 3, the rod is shown as having a screw threaded end 24: which fits in a socket 25 on an extension or handle end rod 26, which may be of any desired length. This construction is utilized so that the cleaning rod may be disjointed for packing and carrying. Inthe construction shown in Fig. 3' the end of the rod is provided with a series of notches or barbs 27 to allow ready attaching and holding of a swab which may be used to clean the rifle barrel after the grooves have been thoroughly cleaned. v

The manner of operationand using my rifle cleaning rod is believed apparent, however, it may be stated that the leading end of the rod is int oduced in the nozzle of the rifle barrel and as the prong is resilient amt presses outwardly, it is necessary to press this in in order to effect its entrance in the rifle. The cutting edge offthe prong is positioned in one of the 'groovcs and the rod is thrust inwardly, the movement inwardly rotating the rod on account ofth e,;prong fol lowing the helical groove. Th e rod may be run in and out a number of times to thoroughly clean the first groove, and then shifted to the second and so on until all the grooves are thoroughly cleaned, after which a swab may be used to clean out the dirt and to polish the lands.

It isobvious that my cleaning rod may be made in any suitable size and may be adapted to cleaning the rifling in ordnance. A smaller size may be used for ordinary rifles and, if desired, a still smaller size maybe used for revolvers and pistols.

Various changes may be made in the principles of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, as set forth in the description, drawings and claims.

I claim: 7 1. A rifle cleaning rod comprising a cylindrical rod like structure having a projection 9 with a curved-up end, the upper surface of the projection being fiat, the said end being adapted to ride on the lands of rifling, a

' prong split from the rod on the side opposite the projecting end, said prong being bent laterally and of resilient material, the prong being tapered and having a chisel like cutting edge to follow the grooves in rifiing, the chisel edge being set backwardly from the curved end of the projection.

2. A device as described, comprising in combination a rod-like structure having a projecting end, a prong extending laterally from the rod-like structure and having a cutting point' to extend in the grooves of rifling, the point of the prong terminating back of the point of the projecting end, the projecting end and part of the body of the rod being adapted to slide on the lands of the rifiing.

In a device as described, a rod-like structure having a split at one end, part of the rod on one side of the split having a projecting end With a: point, the other part of the rod having a laterally projecting prong with a cutting point, the prong extending in the same general direction as the projecting end and the point of the prong being adapted to cut in the grooves of rifling, the projecting end and part of the rod being adapted to ride on the lands of the rifling.

4. In a device as described, a cylindrical rod-like structure having a split adjacent one end with a projecting end at one side of the split extending in the same general direction as the rod and having a point, a prong curved laterally to one side at the split and having a cutting end, the Cutting end of the prong terminating short of the point.
