CLEANER ROD GUIDE FOR GUN BARRELS Filed April 12, 1945 INVENTORS HERBERT F.PEAF\SON LEONARD T. BENTZIEN ATTO NEYS Patented Aug. 24, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE CLEANER ROD GUIDE FOR GUN BARRELS Herbert F. Pearson, Menomonee Falls, and Leonard T. Bentzien, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application April 12, 1945, Serial No. 587,950
1 Claim. 1
Our invention refers to guides for gun barrel cleaner rods, and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive one-piece sleeve guide clip for the rod.
Practice has demonstrated that metal rods, carrying a cleaning swab, when reciprocated back and forth in a rifle barrel will, due to whipping, rub or grind the muzzle. The result is that the rifle will shortly become worn or so damaged as to cause a bullet shot therefrom to fail in its direct hit upon the target. Thus, the rifled barrel will require refinishing or a new barrel to remedy the defect. Hence, by the use of our invention, such contingency is remedied, whereby the rifling in the barrel will be maintained at its efficiency peak over long periods.
With the above and other minor objects in view, the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth with reference to the drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a fragment of a rifle barrel having fitted therein any standard cleaner rod, associated with a rod guide, embodying the features of our invention. parts being broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate structural features.
Figure 2, a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the same, the section being indicated by line Z--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3, an inverted plan view of the guide, and
Figure 4, an end elevation of the same with a portion broken away.
Referring by characters to the drawing, A indicates a standard metallic cleaner rod, which rod is seated in the rified bore of a gun barrel B.
The rod is reciprocatively mounted in a thin metal tubular section I, which tubular section is fitted into the muzzle of the gun barrel, whereby the rod is guided and centered.
The sleeve has downwardly extending therefrom, a curved finger gripping wings 2 2, which wings form part of a flat radially extended supporting portion 3. that merges into the tubular section. It is understood that the guide unit may be die swaged or cast of any suitable material.
When the guide is fitted to the muzzle of a rifle barrel, the downwardly bowed wings, which are positioned below the gun muzzle, may be conveniently gripped by the fingers of one hand to thus firmly clamp the guide in proper position, it being understood that the fingers of the other hand, at the same time, are gripping said 2 gun barrel, whereby these gripped parts are firmly held with one hand while the cleaner rod is manipulated with the other.
Referring particularly to Figure 1 of the drawings, when the cleaner rod is reciprocated back and forth through the bore of the barrel, it will be centered due to the fact that it is guided by the tubular section I, and hence will not tend to mar the rifle bore. As indicated in dotted lines, the guide is securely held in its position with reference to the gun barrel muzzle by simply holding the wings, with fingers of the hand, the operator grips the barrel.
It is also understood that the rod is provided with any standard swab (not shown), and due to this simple device, the said rod is, in effect, held clear of the rifiing so as not to mar the same.
While I have shown one exemplification of my invention as to detail, it is understood that I may very the structural features of it, within a fair interpretation of the claim.
We claim:
A cleaner rod guide for rifle barrels, comprising a tubular section, the outer face thereof being adapted to snugly fit within a gun barrel and the inner face to snugly fit over a cleaner rod, a radially extended support ng portion surrounding the upper edge of the tubular section, said supporting portion terminating in a pair of diametrically opposite bowed wing-like members extending radially therefrom and having the convex side of said bowed members directly below the sa d supporting port on, whereby the wing-like members serve as finger grips between the guide and gun barrel, while the other hand. of the operator reciprocates a cleaning rod.
