WILLIAM MCMANUS AND CHARLES N. DILATUSII, OF I-IAGERMAN, IDAHO.
DOGMWIUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,329, dated April 16, 1901.
Application filed August 23, 1900- Serial No. 27,792. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM MOMANUS and CHARLES N. DILATUsH, citizens of the United States, and residents of Hagerman, in the county of Lincoln and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Dog- Muzzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a dog-muzzle which will not only prevent vicious dogs from attacking men or animals, but which will also preventdogs from eating refuse, and thereby exposing themselves to poisoning.
The device is particularly intended for use on sheep-dogs in the western districts of this country, in which districts the sheep-ranges are poisoned to exterminate Coyotes.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of our invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the ligure represents a perspective View of the invention.
The muzzle has a neck-strap or collar a, the ends of which are joined bya buckle J at the top, and this strap is riveted or otherwise se# curely fastened to rearward projections c', formed on the body portion c of the muzzle. This body portion is preferably constructed of sheet metal, having a flat bottom and perpendicular side flanges, from which side flanges the extensions c project. The side flanges of the body c taper or incline downward toward the front end and are joined together by cross-braces CZ. These braces are formed, preferably, of Wire and are here shown to be two in number. A head-strap e is fastened by a buckle f to the upper part of the strap a, directly adjacent to the buckle l), and
extends forwardly to the front cross-brace CZ, to which it is fastened. A nose-strap g has its end portions adjustably secured in slots c2 in the body portion c of the muzzle, the edges of the said slots being serrated, so that the strap g is held in the position in which it is placed.
In applying the muzzle the strap a is passed around the neck of a dog just back of the ears and the body portion c is extended under the jaws of the dog, so that the front end of the body portion projects forward beyond the nose to such a degree as to prevent the dog from eating or even licking. The nosestrap g passes over the nose, and the headstrap e extends down over the top of the head and nose.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A dog-muzzle, having a body portion comprising closed bottom and side walls or iianges, the body lying under the mouth of the dog, a cross brace or braces extending between the side iianges at the front of the body portion, and means for holding the body in position.
2. A dog-muzzle, comprising a body, the front part of which is extended forwardly under the mouth of the dog to prevent the dog taking food, and means for holding the body in its position.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM MCMANUS` CHARLES N. DILATUSH.
