VETERINARY MOUTH-SPECULUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,838, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed March 21, 1892. Serial Il'o. 425,874. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. ELLIOTT, of Greenville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful VeterinaryMonth-Speculum andl do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Myinvention consists of a mouth-speculum, and is intended to be used in veterinary practice to open and hold open the mouth of a horse for the inspection of the teeth or throat.
Figure 1 shows a front View of the speculum partially closed. Fig. 2 is a side or back view of the bar E, showing how the eyes I I I and I are fastened on the bar E. Fig. 3 is an inside view showing the tongue with the notches thereon. grooved edge of the bars D D. Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of the bars D D and E with the tongue thereon. Fig. 6 shows a perspective view of the speculum with the straps M M thereon that pass along the side and over the top of the head of the horse to hold the speculum securely while in use. Fig. 7 shows a cross-section of the bars E and E. Fig. 8 shows a cross-section of the bars D D. Fig. 9shows said device open. Y
In Figs. 1 and 6 the outside frame that holds the sliding frame consists of the bars A, E E, and J, eyes I II and I, and nuts C C with the notches K K on the bars E E, and the rod N, running through J, with a nut on the end of said rod. The sliding frame, also shown in said Figs. 1 and 6, consists of the bars B, D D, and H, the catches F F,secured by the rivets, as shown, and the chain G, each end of which is fastened to each of said catches F F, as shown, and the metal springs L L.

The frame to which said bar His attached is then drawn down and securely held in place by the catches F and F dropping into the notches K K and being held in the notches by the metal springs L L, thereby holding the mouth open securely for the inspection of the teeth and throat.- To close the mouth, the chain G is pulled down, thereby releasing the catches F F from the notches K K. The pressure of the lower jaw on the under side of the bar B will raise the sliding frame against the bar A, and thereby allow the mouth to close.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a veterinary mouthspeculum, of the rectangular frame, with the bars A and B of its upper part adapted to enter the horses 1nouth,with the bar J in the lower part serving as a handle, with the ratchets K K on the inner sides of the bars E E of the upright frame, the interior sliding frame with its spring-pawls joined by the chain G and connected to the bars D D of said sliding frame, and with the bar H, also serving as a handle, and the straps M M, attached to said device, substantially as described.
