Be it known that I, JAMES L. MAULL, a citi- .Zen of the United States, residing at West Whiteland, county of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and amusing Pneumatic Toy, of which the following is a specilication.

li/Iyinvention relates to a new and amusing toy, and has for its object to provide a toy which can be fastened to the garment of the wearer and be operated by a tube and bulb upon pressure of this bulb, which is to be concealed underneath the garment, and in which a figure or other object, here represented as a negros head, is made to appear above and disappear behind some stationary object, here illustrated as a slice of watermelon, for the purpose ot surprising and amusing onlookers.

With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may Linderstand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detaihreferring to the accompanying` drawings, forming a part of this specification, in

In carrying out my invention as embodied in Figs. l, 2, and 3 I provide a body A, having a chamber B located therein. Through the lower inclosed end of the body A is a passage a, which passes through the nipple C.

seria no. 20,295. in@ man Upon this nipple C is secured the rubber tube D, and to the opposite end of this tube is secured the bulb E, thereby providing means for forcing air within the chamber B.

F is a piston adapted to fit closely within the chamber B and adapted to be pushed upward under air-pressure when the bulb is compressed and to be retracted when the bulb E is released.

Secured upon the body A and extending above the same is a iiat piece G, upon the front side of which is painted any desired object. (Here shown as a representation of a slice of watermelon.) Upon the upper end ofthe piston F is secured the dat piece H, upon which is painted any suitable object, (here represented as the head of a negro,) and this piece H when in its lowest position, as shown in dotted in lines in Fig. l and full lines in Figs. 2 and 3, is adapted to be entirely hid behind the piece G; `but when airpressure is applied underneath the piston F said piston, and consequently the piece H, is forced upward into view above the piece G. An inverted-U -shaped piece l, having its two ends secured to each side of the body A, eX- tends upward therefrom and forms a stop for limiting the upward motion of the piston. A piu J is secured upon the rear of the body A and is adapted to secure the toy upon the garment and be held in place by the latch K.

In operation my invention is adapted to be secured by the pin J to the coat or vest of the wearer, and the tube D passes down underneath the coat or vest, and the bulb E may be located within the pocket orother suitable place, so that the tube and bulb are entirely concealed, and by examination of the toy by any curious person or persons the bulb may be secretly pressed, thereby forcing the head upward into view, which will cause considerable amusement and surprise.

The adaptation of my toy, as shown in Fig. 4, consists in the arrangement of two heads L, connected together upon a suitable frame M, (shown in dotted lines,) and the proper arrangement of two air-chambers N, (also shown in dotted lines,) in which suitable pistons are fitted, as before described in connection with Fig. 1, and these pistons terminate in the arms O. Two tubes P lead from the cham- IOO bers to suitable bulbs. From this itwill be seen that the proper manipulation of these bulbs will cause the arms to move outward and thrust the fists of each against the face of the opposite head, which Awill give the appearance of two persons fighting.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown the representation of a basket Q and in connection therewith two air-chambers R, arranged parallel and having fitted therein the pistons S, which carry upon their upper ends the sections T and T', each of which has painted or stamped thereon some suitable design, such as fruit, so that by the manipulation of the bulbs leading to the air-chambers one or the other of these sections may be made to appear above the edge of the basket, so as to represent a basket ot fruit or the like.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modiervaart" ications may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- In a pneumatic toy, a frame, an inverted- U-shaped piece secured to the frame, an airchamber, a piston in the air-chamber carrying a fiat piece ou its upper end to one side ofthe inverted-U-shaped piece, the parts being so arranged that the end of the piston abuts the inverted-U-shaped piece when the figure carried by the piston is above the frame.
