Description

K. D. GOSTIN.
AMUSEMENT DEWQE. APPLICATION men sums. 1917.
1 367,21 1. Patented May 21, 1918.
INVENTOR I ATTORNEY KATHARINE DEWSON GOSTIN, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 5, 1917. Serial No. 189,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHARINE D. Gos- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in amusement devices and the principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby a person may be suspended in the airand moved about.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the body of the person while being swung about will be caused to assume a horizontal position.
Among other features my invention in cludes a number of broad straps forming a harness to embrace the upper part of the body of the person with means carried by said harness whereby the same may be suspended from a cable carried by a derrick or the like, so that the person may be suspended in the air and moved about; and it also includes a set of wings or planes secured to the harness for causing the person to assume a horizontal position while being swung by the derrick.
With the above and other objects iii-view the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view showing the invention in use,
Fig. 2 is a rear view, and
Fig. 3 shows suspending means for the body.
In these figures 1 represents the harness which is made of broad straps of leather or the like and consists of the belt part 2 and the left shoulder strap 3 which is secured to the belt at the front thereof and is carried around the left shoulder and secured to the back part of the belt. 4 represents the right shoulder strap which is secured to the belt at the center thereof at the same point at which the strap 3 is secured, and said strap is then carried across the right shoulder down across the back and is removably se cured to the belt by means of the snap 5 or in any other suitable manner. The belt is provided in front with the well known form of buckle 6. A ring 7 is secured to the back part of the belt and the ends of the two I shoulder straps pass through said ring to strengthen the construction.
A pair of wings or planes 8 is secured to the rear part of the belt and said wings are spaced apart so that they are arranged to project from the body of the person just back of the arms. These wings may be made in any desired form but I prefer to make them of straw which is covered with a suitable fabric as shown.
When the invention is to be used by a woman I connect a belt 9 of rubber or the like to pass around the bottom of her skirt, and this belt is connected with the leather belt by means of a cord 10 or the like.
I prefer to use the invention with a derrick capable of raising the body to a certain height and swinging it around in a circle, the derrick being provided with a cable having a hook at its free end which is to engage the ring of the harness. It will be seen that when the body is swung the wings will cause it to assume a horizontal position and give the effect of a person flying.
When desired I may place a bar on the end of the cable instead of the hook so that the persons may fly in couples.
If desired I may suspend a horizontal bar from the supporting rod which the person may grasp with his hands.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the ad vantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the class described comprising means for suspending a person in the air and moving him about, and means for automatically causing the body to assume a horizontal position while being so swung.
2. In a device of the class described comprising a harness adapted to be placed around a persons body, a suspending means connected with said harness, and means connected with the harness for automatically throwing the body into a horizontal position when said body is swung in the air.
3. A device of the class described comprising a harness for engaging a persons body, means connected with the harness for suspending the person in the air, and wings connected with said harness..-
4: In a device of the class described GOD1-= Patented May 21, 1918.,
prising a harness for engaging the body of belt of resilient material, and a cord connect the person, suspending means carried by ing said belt with the harness. said harness, Wings c'tiii ilected to the harness, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 10 and a resilient belt attached to the harness.
5 5. A device of the class described c0n1pris KATHARINE DEWSON GOSTIN' ing a harness suspending means connected Witness: therewith, Wings cbnne'cted t0 the harness, a R. F. FINORER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, W'ashington, D. 0.
