WILLIAM F. SEAVEY, o F PORTLAND, MAIN-E. Letters Patent No. 67,139, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRACES BITS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WIL-HAM F. SEAVEY, of Port-land, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, y have invented a new and improved Bit-Brace; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accom# panying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a bit-stock with the boreisecured therein 1n the manner embraced in my invention.
yFigure 2is a. view of a. portion of the borer, showing the n'otches. Figure 3 shows a plan of the slide. v Same letters show like parts.
The object of my invention is the production of a convenient and secure method of fastening the bit or borer into its place in the bit-stock.
1 shows that portion of the bit-stock which is curved, and by which the rotary motion is given to the bor-er. In the drawing only a portion of this is illustrated. 2, in the sume figure, shows that portion-of the bit-stock into which the borer is inserted, as shown in the drawing. a represents the bit or borcr, und as seen in iig. 2 it has notches b. C shows the slide, having a slot composed of the three parts 3, 4, and 5. Through the part r 2 is made a horizontal aperture in which can be moved 4the slide C. AThis is illustrated in iig. 1. d is a screw, serving to secure the slide C- in its'place, and passing through the slide C in that part of the slot in said slide designated by 3, so that the slide can be moved asiindicated bythe dotted lines in iig. 1, and back. The part/1 of the slot in the slide is of the same size as the vertical` aperture in the part 2 of the bit-stock, and when the slide is so moved as that this part 4 matches with the vertical aperture in the part 2, then the vertical aperture is left wholly open, and the bit or borer can be easily withdrawn, the slide at this time being in the position indicated by the dotted lines in iig. 1. When the slide is pulled back so that the back end of the same is at 6, then the part 5 of the slot in the slide C embraces theupper part of lthe bit or borer, and its edges pass into the notches b, thus holding the bit or borer securely. The aperture in the part 2 of the bit-stock is heneath'A. r When heldpby the part 5 of the slot in the slide, the bit or borer is additionally secured by being made square at the upper end and fitting into an aperture which is also square.
l do not claim my invention as a method of attaching angers to vtheir handles. My invention has relation 't to the attachment of the bit or borer to the class of boring implements iu which revolution is given to the borer by a crank-shaped handle, which implement is called a. bit. I do not claim a ring with the narrowest parts thereof resting upon a pin, where the shank of the tool is inserted with a notch made therein thrown over a catch, and the shank held rmlyagainst the catch by revolving the ring in part around a ferrule, as is shown in patent of Guy H. Hubbard, March 6, 1855. Neither do I claim the combination of a tube, to which two hand-pieces are attached to form the handle of the tool, withl a tubular sleeve placed over said tube, so as to turn thereon, and having-an aperture and slot to hold the barbed head of an auger, and a spring-catch to hold l it in place, as is claimed in the patent of H. W. Olney, November 7, 1865. My invention differs from these in having a slotted sliding plate moving in a slot in the part 2 of n. hit-stock, and being held in position by a screw and the slot in which it moves. When thrust out in one way, as shown in tig. 1, the borer is released from or A may be introduced 'into the bit-stock, and when the slide is pushed back the borer is held in position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The horizontally sliding slotted plate C, when moving in the slot in the part 2 of the bit-brace, and further secured by the screw d, and having the three slots 4 5, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth V and described. y
