PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MOKNIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTOR FOR BOTTOMS OF SHEET-METAL BOILERS.
SPEGIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 671,385, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed May 17 1900.
To all whm'rt it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MOKNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Protectors for the Bottoms of Sheet-Metal Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in protectors for the bottoms of sheet-metal boilers, and has for its object to provide a secondary bottom made in sections and adapted to be secured upon the ordinary bottom of a washboiler or the like, and thereby protect it from the wear and tearincident to its use.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in
- which-- Figure l is a section of a portion of a boiler, showing my improved protector attached thereto; Fig. 2, a bottom view showing the protector in place, and Fig. 3 a perspective of the protector before being applied.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied I provide a false bottom composed of two sections A and B,each of which is flanged, as indicated at C, so as to embrace and slide over the bead or edge D of the washboiler E. The section B has an extension E, which is adapted to overlap the inner edge of the section A, and a lip G is formed upon this eX- tension by the metal being slitted, and this lip passes under the section A when the two sections are shoved in place, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This interlocking of the edges of the sections will securely hold them Serial No. 16,999. (No model.)
in place and present a sufficiently smooth surface to permit the Washboiler to sit upon the stove in the usual manner.
While my improvementis especially adapted for use in connection with washboilers, it is obvious that it may be used with equal facility in connection with any other vessel having a projecting edge.
By being made in two sections, as here shown, my improvementis easily applied and when in place will thoroughly protect the bottom of the vessel from the wear and tear incident to its use, and when this false bottom or protector becomes useless by wear it may be removed and another substituted therefor.
A further advantage which my improvement has is that it supports and stiffens the bottom of a vessel, and in the case of large washboilers this is a decided advantage, preventing the bottom from warping and buckling out of shape.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. In combination with a vessel of the character described, a protector consisting of a false bottom made in two sections, each section being flanged so as to engage the projecting edges of the vessel, and an extension formed upon one of said sections for overlapping the edge of the other, as specified.
2. A protector for the bottoms of vessels consisting of two sections adapted to fit under the vessel, each of said sections having a flange for engaging with the projecting edge of the vessel, one of said sections having an extension, and a lip for interlocking with the edge of the other section, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
