CLOSET SEAT.
(Application filed Dec. 14, 1899.) (No Model.) 3 Sheets-Sheet 3.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD D. WATERS, OF BUFFALO, NEWV YORK.
CLOSET-SEAT.
SPECIF1UA1ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,360, dated April 2, 1901-. Application filed December 14, 1899. Serial No. 740,302. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD D. WATERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bu-ffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to closet-seats.
The object of the invention is to provide simple, durable, and inexpensive means for connecting the closet-seat direct to the bowl, which means shall be of such construction as to permit of the seat being readily removed when desired, provision being made by means of which the seat may be attached to the bowls which curve their entire length or to the bowls which have vertical straight rims.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the seat secured to the bowl by my improved fastening means. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the under side of the seat, showing the fastening means secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a bowl curved its entire length and illustrating the seat secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a bowl, the upper end of which is straight, and showing the manner of attaching the seat thereto. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the seatlugs. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the rigid clamping-jaws. Fig. 7 is a view of the sliding clamping-jaws. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the removable shoes for the fixed clampingjaws. Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional view through the fixed and movable jaws, the parts being assembled. Fig. 10 is a cross-sectional view through the fixed jaw and its shoe.
' In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the "closet-bowl, which may be curved from its lower to its upper end, as shown in Fig. 3, or which may have a straight upper rim, as shown in Fig. 4. 2 denotes the seat. These parts may be of any well-known or approved construction.
4 denotes seat-lugs, which are secured to the under side of the seat in the usual manner and are provided with lateral and inwardly-projecting stud-bearings 5. One of these lugs has a rearwardly-extending arm 6, from which is adapted to be suspended a weight 7 for the purpose of elevating said seat when not in use. 7
8 denotes the fixed clamping-jaws, which may be connected together by a cross-bar 9, if desired. These jaws are formed with perforated ears 8 to pivot upon the stud-bearings hereinbefore mentioned. Formed in the base of each of these clamping-jaws is an angular recess 10, which communicates with a smooth aperture. The faces of the rigid clamping-jaws may be so formed as to engage a bowl the external surface of which has a straight upper end or a bowl the external surface of which has a curved upper end. To adapt the device to a bowl which would not fit the face of the fixed jaw, I provide the jaw with a removable shoe 11, which if the jaw be constructed to engage a bowl having a straight upper end will be curved to engage a bowl having a curved upper end, and vice versa.
12 denotes the sliding jaws, adapted to engage the inner flange of the upper end of the bowl. These jaws are provided with a squared shank 13 to fit into the angular recesses aforesaid and with screw-threaded shanks 14 to project through the apertures in said fixed jaws. Nuts 15 are screwed upon the ends of these shanks and serve to draw the two sets of jaws together and clamp them about the upper endof the bowl.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of myimproved device will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation. The construction is simple and permits of the manufacture of theinvention at small cost, and it will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the. minor detailsof construction maybe resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus described the invention,- what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In acloset-seat attachment, the combination with seat-lugs provided with pivotstuds, fiXed jaws provided with perforated ears to receive said studs and with angularrecesses and with apertures registering with the recesses; of sliding jaws having angular; shanks to engage said recesses and thereby be prevented from turning, screw-threaded ends to pass through said apertures, and nuts i to engage upon said screw-threaded ends substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a closet-seat attachment, the corn'bination with seat-lugs provided with pivotstuds, fixed jaws provided with perforated ears to receive said studs and with angular; recesses and with apertures registering with? the recesses, shoes connected 'to said jaws and having their faces of a different profile from the faces of said jaws; of slidingjaws having angular shanks to engage said recesses and thereby be prevented from turning, andi screw-threaded ends to passthrough said apertures, and nuts to engage upon said screw-a threaded ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a closet-seat attachment, the combination with seat-lugs provided with pivotstuds, fixed jaws having an integral connecting cross-piece and provided with perforated HOWA RD D. WATERS.
