EIPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,153, dated April 2, 1901. Application filed December 28,1900. Serial No. 4!,395. kNo model.)
T0 or w/wm/ it igtay concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. WEIHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Minden, in the county of Washington and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompany ing drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in faucets; and it consists in the novel construction of faucet more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a middle vertical longitudinal section taken through the casing and stuffing-box, the remaining parts being in elevation. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the outer end of the faucet. Fig. 3 is a front end view, and Fig. 4 is a side eleration, of the device.
The present invention is specially applicable for drawing ofi liquids which are in their nature slow running, like molasses, heavy oils, glycerin, and the like, though I do not wish to limit its application to that class, as the faucet may be used for drawing off liquids of any character whatever. In the case of visoid fluids, however, the present device assists their natural flow in effecting their escape from the cask or vessel confining them.
In detail the invention may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the outer casing or tube, having a front enlargement 1, behind which is the delivery-nozzle 2. The latter is surrounded by a ring of cork 3, projecting a suitable distance beyond the nozzle, the said cork ring being held in place by an annular metallic band 4. The edge of the cork ring 3' cooperates with the pivoted gate or on t-off 5, provided at its free end with a knob 6 and pivotally mounted in a pocket 7, within which it is free to turn in one direction only, (as a precautionary measure.) Within the casing 1 is mounted a twist-box 8 on the order of an auger, the forward stem 9 of which operates in a stuffing-box 10, a suitable packingring 11 being placed about the stem to the rear of the follower of the stuffingbox. Over the outer square or polygonal end of the stem 9 is passed a crank-arm 12, by
which the twist-bar 8 is rotated. The inner endjof the casing 1 is preferably screw-threaded for attaching the casing to a cask or barrel 13, containing the liquid to be drawn.
The contact between the cork 3 and the gate 5 makes a tight joint, preventing the liquid from drippingwhen the gate is closed. By locating the nozzle 2 to the rear of the enlargement 1 it is practically concealed from view, and there is little danger of children or unauthorized persons opening the gate 5 and allowing the contents of the cask to go to waste.
Additional safety is imparted to the device by allowing the gate 5 to swing in but one direction, the pocket 7 opening laterally from the base of the enlargement 1. With very thick or visoid fluid the operator after opening the gate or valve 5 (swinging .it in the direction shown by the dotted position in Fig. 2) imparts rotation to the twist-bar 8 by turning the crank-arm 12 in proper direction, the twist or anger having the efiect of delivering the fluid along the spiral passage of the said auger and forcing it positively through the delivery-nozzle 2.
It is apparent, of course, that minor changes may be made in the device without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. A faucet having an outer casing, a delivery-nozzle located a suitable distance from the forward end thereof, a gate carried by the casing adjacent to the nozzle and adapted to close the mouth of the same, a twist-bar in said casing, a stem forming a part of said bar and projecting from the forward end of the casing a suitable distance, a stuffing-box for said stem, and means interposed between the gate and the nozzle for effecting a tight joint between them, substantially as set forth.
2. A faucet having an outer casing, a forward enlargement forming a part thereof, a delivery-nozzle to the rear of said enlargement, a gate pivoted at the base of the enlargement and adapted to close the mouth of the nozzle, a twist-bar in said casing, a stem forming a part of said bar and projecting forward from the casing a suitable distance, a stufling-box for said stem, and means carried liquid through the casingto the nozzle, sub- 10 stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L, VVEIHE.
