WAGON BOX SHIELD.
(N0 Modgl.)
(Application filed Mar. 24, 1900.

WAGON-BOX SHIELb.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,990, dated A ril 2, 1961.
Application filed March 24, 1900. Serial No. 10,114. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR G. HOUK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the countyof Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Box Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularlyto a metallic shield 'for protecting and strengthening that portion of the wagon-box overlying the vehicle-bolster adjacent the bolster-standard, and has for itsobject the production of a device for receiving the bolster and for shielding the Wagon-box adjacent thereto; and to this end my invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as will be fully pointed out in the following description and claims.
Referring to the accompanying, drawings, forming a part of this application, in which like letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of a part of a wagon-box overlying the bolster adjacent the standard and of my invention entire secured thereon.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view. Fig. 3 is a bot tom plan of the same. Fig. 4: is a detail view showing the reinforcement part. Fig. 5 is an end elevation showing the reinforcement part of my invention.
A refers to a detached part of an ordinary wagon-box, B to the wagon-bolster, and O to the bolster-standard.
My invention, by preference constructed of integral sheet-steel, comprises a body part D, an upstanding wing E, a pair of downstanding jaws F, a pair of lateral flanges G, a pair of triangular-shaped braces I-I between the jaws and the flanges, and the reinforcing parts 1 The vertical wing E is bent up from the outer end of the body part and is provided near its outer corners with suitable openings for the reception of the through-bolts I,which pigidly secure it to the side of the wagon-box A. The jaws F, bent downward from the sides of the body part, receive the wagonbolster B between them for holding the wagon-box stationary thereon. The lateral flanges G are bottom of the wagon-boX by means of the openings G for the reception of ordinary through-bolts. The triangularfshapedbraces I-I form a substantial brace between the walls of the jaws F and the flanges G, which prevents the walls of the jaws F giving or bending laterally. The reinforcing parts I bent inward and downward to the bottom of the jaws F and across the body part D, are provided for the purpose ofreinforcing the jaws F, which imparts by the gravitation or weight of the wagon-box greater strength and firmmess to my device.
My invention is rigidly secured on the wagon-box over the wagon-bolster adjacent the bolster-standard for shielding and strengthening that portion of the wagon-box immediately overlying the wagon-bolster adjacent the bolsterstandard and for holding the wagon-box stationary on the wagon-bolster, which prevents any sliding thereon.
In the construction of ,my device cast, wrought, or malleable iron or similar hard material suitable for its purpose may be used and modifications in structure and form may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention.
In the above construction I produce a simple, durable, and efficient device for shielding, strengthening, and holding the wagonbox of vehicles more effectually than has been done heretofore.
Having thus fully described my invention and set forth the use and advantages thereof, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wagon-box shield comprising a body part, an upstanding wing, a pair of downstanding jaws, a pair of lateral flanges, a pair of triangular-shaped braces bet ween the Walls of the jaws and the flanges and means for rigidly securing the same to the wagon-box, all made in the manner and for the purposes set forth, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a wagon-box, an integral shield mounted thereon over the bolster adjacent the standards, the same comprising body part, an upstanding wing, a
pair of downstanding jaws, a pair of lateral flanges, a pair of triangular-shaped braces between the walls of the jaws and the flanges and suitable openings and means for rigidly IOO securing the upstanding Wing and lateral I of reinforcing parts for the jaws and thebody flanges t0 the Wagon-box, all as and for the part and means for rigidly securing the same 10 purpose set forth, substantially as specified.
3. In a wagon-box shield havinga body part provided With an upstanding wing, a pair of downstanding jaws, a pair of lateral flanges, Witnesses:
a pair of triangular-shaped braces between O. W. BROWN, the Walls of the jaws and the flanges, a pair G. W. L. BROWN.
to the Wagon-box.
