Description

G. H. ROSE.
ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP BURNERS.
(Application filed Jan. 20, 1900.)'
No. 670,517. Patented Mar. 26 ,'l90l.
(No Model.)
GEORGE I-I. ROSE, ,OF CANTON, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 670,517, dated March 26, 19 01.
Application filed January 20, 1900. Serial No. 2,199. (No model.)
To all whom it may conceive.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton,
in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Lamp-Burners; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing a portion of the lamp-body. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the connecting thimble or band. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through line X X, Fig. 1, except that the section is taken at right angles to said line.
The present invention has relation to attachments for lamp-burners; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the burner proper, which may be of the form shown ,or it may be of any other desired form,
. inasmuch as the burner proper forms no particular part of the present invention, except that a burner of some kind must necessarily be used to carry out the purposes hereinafter described. 7
The ordinary screw-threaded flange 2 of the burner l is attached to the band or thimble 3 by means of suitable screw-threads 4, formed upon the inner periphery of said band or thimble, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and said band or thimble 3, connected to the flange 5, which flange is connected to the lamp-body 6 in the usual manner. The screw threads 7 are formed upon the outer periphery of the connecting-baud 3, said screw-threads being for the purpose of connecti'ngsaid band-to the ordinary screw-thread flange 5, connected to an ordinary lamp-body 6. v
For the purpose of providing a safetylampor, in other words, providing for the escape of any gas that may accumulate in provided with the apertures 8, which apertures are located directly opposite each other, as illustrated in the drawings, and are for the purpose above stated and for the additional purpose of allowing air to pass through said apertures, and thereby produce better combustion.
It will be understood that by my improved device all danger of explosions is done away with by reason of providing means for the rapid escape of accumulated gas from the lam p-body proper or from the vessel containing the fuel from which the light is fed.
It will be understood that when the band or thimble 3 is placed in proper position upon the burner 1 the apertures 8 should come opposite the fiat sides of the wick 9, and in order to accomplish this the convolutions of the screw-threads 4, formed upon the inner periphery of the band or thimble 3, should end directly above one of the apertures 8, as illustrated at X, Fig. 2. By this arrangement the band or thimble 3 can be turned until it comes to a dead stop, and when brought to a dead stop the apertures will be in proper position with reference to the wick 9, or, in other words, with reference to the Wick passage or tube formed in the burner.
I have illustrated two apertures such as 8; but it will be understood that a single aperture maybe used and the same object accomplished; but I prefer to provide the thimble or band 3 with the two apertures illustrated and located as shown.
The convolutions of the screw threads formed upon the inner periphery of the collar terminate so that the rotation of the ring or thimble 3 will be stopped at a point so as to locate the aperture or apertures formed in the ring directly opposite the flat side'sof the wick.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-
The combination of a lamp burner provided with a screw-threaded collar, a band or thimble formed of uniform diameter throughout its entire length, and provided with screwthreads upon its outer and inner peripheries,
an aperture formed in the band and'between i the convolutions of the screw-threads, and
the lamp-body 6the screw-thread band 3 is 1 the screw-threads upon the inner periphery of the band terminating at a point opposite I In testimony that l claim the above have the aperture located between the SGIGW- hereunto subscribed my name in the presthreads and the serewthreads upon the colence of two Witnesses.
lai' formed to stop the rotation of the band GEORGE H. ROSE. I k 5 at a point opposite the fiat side of the wick Witnesses:
all arranged, substautiallyas and for the pur- J. A. J EFFERS,
pose specified. F. W. BOND.
