E Ww E jw H-ga UNITE? JAMES F. MCELROY, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CONSOLIDATED CAR-HEATING CO.
OF SAME PLACE.
TEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,960, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed December 27, 1900. Serial No. 41,244. (No model.)
To r/ZZ whom it may concern: t
Be it known that I, JAMES F. MCELROY, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and a resident of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Hose Couplers, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to steanrcouplers particularly adapted for connecting steam-hose io between cars in railway-car-heating apparatus; and the object of my invention is to provide a steam-coupler composed of two like halves adapted to be fastened together and to be broken automatically by the disengagement of the adjoining cars, each half of said coupler being provided with a hinged gasketholder. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lisaplan; Fig. 2, an elevation; Fig. 3, a perspective view; Fig. 4, an elevation showing the two parts of the couplers joined.`
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Each half ofthe coupler consists of a casting A, preferably provided with an upturned nozzle B and a wing C, which wingprojects beyond the face of the couplerand which carries a locking-ange D, adapted to engage with a lug E on the opposite side of the adjoining coupler-head. The mode of fastening the two parts of the couplers together, as shown in the drawings, is substantially that of the Well-known Sewall coupler, and I do not limit myself to any particular means for accomplishing this result, but show this as one of the ways in which the locking together of the two parts may be accomplished. For the purpose of retaining the gasket in position and to allow for the removal of an old gasket and the insertion of a new I place the plate F, containing an opening for a gasket G therein, which plate is hinged to the casting A by means of the bolt II and lugs h or in any suitable manner. At the side of the plate F, I preferably attach or form integral therewith a lugf, adapted to fit within a suitable opening in the .wing C adjacent to the face of the casting A. I preferably place on the plate F, near the lower portion thereof, a rib 5o K, extending about half-way across the face of the plate, and cut a groove la, corresponding to said rib, in the face of the plate F from the end of the rib K to the edge of the plate F, as shown in Fig. 3, which groove 7c is adapt- 55 ed to receive the rib K on the adjoining half of the cou pler when they are brought together.
On the wing C, I preferably pivota catch L, which may be brought in contact with the lugf when the plate F is closed, which will 6o hold the plate F and gasket G securely inposition. Gasket G is placed within the plate F when the plate is opened, portion g of the gasket G protruding through the opening in the plate F, the sides g of the gasket G in the rear of the plate F extending beyond the opening in contact with the rear surface of the plate. When the plate is closed and locked by means of the catch L coming in contact with the lugf, the gasket is held posi- 7o tively in position and can be readily removed by opening the plate and a new one can be quickly inserted.
I do not limit myself to the use of the rib K and groove 7c on the face of the plate F nor 75 to the manner of securing the plate by means of the catch L and lugf nor to a hinged construction, as shown and described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-hose coupler consisting of two like halves or portions, each of which consists of a casting provided with a projecting locking-wing on one side; a locking-lug on the opposite side; a gasket-holder; a means for hinging said gasket-holder to said casting; with a means for locking said gasket-holder in position.
2. In a steam-hose coupler, two like halves or portions; each half consisting of a casting; 9o a means for locking the two halves together;
a gasket-holder; a means for hinging said gasket-holder to the casting; a rib on said gasket-holder extending across the lower portion thereof; a groove cut in the face of said gasket-holder from the end of said rib to the edge of said holder; with a means for locking said gasket-holder.
3. In asteam-hose coupler oonsistingof two Signed at Albany, New York, this 25th day like halves or portions, a casting; a means of December, 1900. for uniting the two portions of the cashing together; agraskebholder; a, means forhinging JAMES F' MOELROY 5 said gasket-holder to the Casting; a means for Witnesses:
locking said gasket-holder in position, subl FREDERICK W. CAMERON,
stanuially as described. EDWIN .WILSON
