THEODORE MUNGER, O F CEDAR FALLS, IOWA. Letters Patent Nb. 66,870, dated July 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THEODORE MUNGER, of Cedar Falls, in the county of Black Hawk, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Gate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in \vhieh- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the supporting-roller.
Thegate is supported upon flanged rollers which are pivoted in the posts, the edges of the boards being bevelled to allow the flanges of the wheels to pass freely. The gate is capable of vertical adjustment by causing the rollers to occupy one or another of the spaces between the boards. A self-closing catch is raised by the oblique end of the slat, and engages therewith. I
.In the drawings, A B are posts, to which the rollers C C are journalled by the axes or pivots on which they turn. The gate consists of boards D D D D and vertical slats E E E. The lower edge of the board D and the upper edge of the board D occupy the grooves in the peripheries of the rollers C C, and the gate slides back and forth on them. In case of deep snow, when it is desired to raise the gate, the post F is removed, so that the gate can he slipped clear out and inserted again, with the rollers occupying the space between the boards D D. The-gate is opened and closed by traversing on the rollers, and as the end of the gate approaches the post G, the oblique top edge of the slat E raises the catcl1-H, which slips over the slat and fastens the gate.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Supporting the gate by its longitudinal rails upon two flanged rollers O O, the said rails having their contact edges chamfered or bevelled, whereby the gate is made capable of being adjusted in height, as described.
2. The self-closing catch in combination with the oblique-ended slat. I
To the above specification of my improved gate I have signed my hand this 16th of February, 1867.
THEODORE MUNGER.
