ldatrnrvr @lirica UONCLIN, OF HIGHLAND, KENTUCKY.
SEECFGAlMMEl" forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,093, dated February 12, 1901.
Application filed September 6. 1900. Serial No. 29,187. (No model.)
L @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that l, DAVID B. CONCLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have made certain new and useful Improvements in WTindlassesmf which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in windlasses, and has for an object especially to provide a Windlass which is designed for use in cooper-age, and particularly in tobacco cooperage; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the drawings, Figli re lis aside elevation, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, of a windlass embodying` my invention.
The invention is designed to be applied in use to the barrel or cask and has its base A provided in its outer face with a concave recess A to fit the barrel or cask to Which the windlass is applied in operation. This base A may be of any suitable material and may be of the size necessary or desirable to suit the special line ot` Work for which the device is intended. To this base A, l journal at one end the drum B, which has an opening B, through Which the rope C (indicated in dotted lines, Fig. l) is passed. The other or outer end of the drum is journaled in a bar D, which is secured at Il to the base A, and has the side portions on opposite sides of the drum E and the con necting portion D3, Which extends over the outer end of the drum and furnishes a journal-bearing therefor, as Will be understood from Fig. l. The side arms or portions D2 are provided on the opposite sides of the drum B with guide-openings d for the rope C, and these guide-openings d are arranged in line with each other and with guide-notches a, formed in the base A, as will be understood from lfigs. l and 2.
At its outer' end the drum B is provided with a handle-bar lil, having handles E at its opposite ends, and at the inner end of the drum B, ll provide a ratchet-ring F, which is engaged by a pawl G, which is actuated by a spring G into engagement with the ring F and may be readily released from such engagement by its handle d?, as will be understood from Figs. l and By the described construction it Will be seen the Windlass can be applied to a hogshead of unusually large size, in which case the rope O might pass clear of the notches a and would still be properly guided in the openings d. Again, by the construction shown all parts of the drum are exposed, so its bearings can be readily cleaned and oiled Whenever desired. The ratchet is arranged next to the base-bar, so the handle-lever can be arrangedclose to the portion D3 of the bar D, and the construction is light and can be easily applied and operated.
By my invention I provide a device of great strength and simplicity which is adaptable to all kinds of cooperage, and particularly to tobacco cooper-age, dispensing with the rope and stick now commonly used to twist the joints together, the improved machine enabling the operator to tighten or loosen thev Work, as desired, by simply turning the handle or releasing the pawl, and the device reduces the labor, as it holds the Work just Where it is desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The Windlass for use in cooperage, consisting of the base having its outer' face concaved and provided in its opposite ends with notches open at their' outer ends and forming guides in which the rope may rest and from which the rope may escape in the application of the windlass to extra large hogsheads, the drum journaled at one end in the base and provided at its end next to the inner face of the said base with a ratchet-ring, the bar se cured at its ends to the base between the ends of the latter and the drum and extending at its middle over the drum and provided With a bearing for the outer end of the drum, the side portions of the said bar being provided with openings for the passage of the rope and the windlass being obstructed except for said bar whereby access may be readily had at all times to every part of the drum, the detent supported on the base in position to engage the ratchet-rin g of the drum, and the handle, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described Windlass for coop* ers use consisting of the base provided at its center with a bearing for the drum and at its IOO ends with guide-notches for the rope, the brace l and the .guide-bar, and Jshe handle secured to and guide-bar' secured at its ends to the basesaid drum substantially as set forth. frame between its end notches and its center', and provided in its end portions with guide- 5 openings between the center of and the end Witnesses:
notches of the base and in line with the said BERTHA HILL, end notches, the drum journaled in the base SAMUEL WORMSER.
