CLARENCE EUGEN MORRISON, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
BOLLAR -BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 667,888, dated February 12, 1901.
Application filed June 28,1900. Serial No. 21,909. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE EUGEN Mon- RISON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved collar-button; and the object thereof is to provide an article of this class which is adapted to be used with facility and ease in the operation of attaching a collar to a shirt-band or cuffs to wristbands of a shirt.
The device comprises few and simple parts, and it is durable, inexpensive, and generally effective.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the anneXed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved button; Fig. 2, a sectional plan view taken on the line 0000 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the head of the collar-button extended from the shank; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, an ordinary circular disk or base A and a button-head B. Extended from the concave surface of the disk A is a flattened shank C. This shank is provided at its inner end with rounded shoulders 0, located opposite to each other, and at its outer end with similar shoulders 0, also located opposite to each other.
To the inner flat surface of the button-head B is hinged a bow D by means of the loop I). This said bow is composed of resilient metal, preferably steel, and the two arms cl thereof are normally extended outwardly away from each other. Each arm at is provided with an outwardly-extended lug cl, and these lugs are adapted to engage back of the shoulders c and c for the purpose of retaining the button-head in a normal and an extended position.
In the operation and use of the device the head is normally maintained in position, as illustrated by Fig. 2 of the drawings, with the lugs d of the spring-bow D engaging back of the shoulders o, and owing to the re silient nature of the said how and the narrow width of the flattened shank it is obvious that the shank and button-head are in secure engagement with each other for the purpose of retaining the collar. When it is desired to remove the collar and also to attach it, a sharp quick pull upon the button-head will release the lugs d from engagement with the rounded shoulders 0, allowing the head to be pulled outwardly, the outward movement being limited by means of the shoulders 0. Then the button-head can be readily swung upon the horizontal portion of the bow D and placed into position in alinement with the flattened shank, as illustrated by Fig. 3 of the drawings, which admits of freely attaching and detaching the collar, the head being entirely out of contact with the button-shank.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of contour and design as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to slight structural variations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a collar-button, the combination with a base-plate having a flattened shank, with a double set of shoulders therein, of a springbow having outwardly-extended lugs on its two ends, and a button-head pivoted centrally of said spring-bow, the lugs of the spring-bow adapted to engage the shoulders of the shank for the purpose of locking the button-head thereto, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of June, 1900.
CLARENCE EUGEN MORRISON.
