Be it known that I, HORACE THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cleaning and Setting Tools for Railway Tracks and Switches, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cleaning and setting tools generally used in connection with brooms; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a tool that may be readily connected to any handle adapted thereto; second, to provide a chisel-holder adapted to receive a removable chisel, and, third, a chisel that may be renewed or sharpened at slight expense. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross-section of my device removed from its handle; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a front view of my device upon the broom-handle.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

I prefer to carry out my invention in the manner shown more fully in Figs. 1 and 2, where it will be seen that A represents a casting of any material adapted thereto provided with an internal thread, the aperture growing gradually smaller as the longitudinal depth increases, thereby securing a firm hold upon the handle, which may or may not be provided with a corresponding thread, but slightly tapered, to admit of its entering the cone-shaped aperture, the opposite end of the said casting A being provided with a rectangular opening or chamber of sufficient size and depth to admit one end of the chisel B and hold it securely therein by means of the bolt 0 and nut D, this end of the said chisel being provided with a perforation to receive the bolt 0, corresponding to a like opening in the casting A, one side of which may be rectangular in shape to prevent the turning of the bolt 0, hereinafter referred to.

To prevent the loosening of the chisel Within its support, the chamber or receptacle has a lip at either edge of the chisel, (shown more fully in Fig. 1,) and to facilitate its removal for sharpening when desired I have provided the holder A with a slot through the lip upon either side of the chamber'(shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2) running its entire length, which allows the chamber to expand slightly when the bolt 0 and nut D are removed, but when in their normal position and tightened up hold the chisel securely in place.

I am aware that prior to my invention chisels have been used in connection with handles for this purpose. I therefore do not claim the combination broadly; but

What I do claim is- A cleaning and setting tool for railway tracks and switches, provided with a coneshaped aperture, for receiving the handle, the opposite end having an opening or receptacle 0, provided with a lip or flange at both edges, adapted to receive the chisel B, said chisel sharpened at its protruding end, and securely held in position within its support, by means of the bolt O, and nut D, passing through corresponding openings in the chisel and support A, the flanges preventing any longitudinal movement or adjustment of the chisel rela' tive to the receptacle, substantially as set forth.
