UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT W. TUCKERMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,181, dated March 23, 1875; application filed February 3, 1875.
in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view; Fig. 2, a sectional end view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section through the center of one of the cutters.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the draw- My invention relates to that class of boxscrapers which are provided with adjustable cutters; and consists in a novel construction and operation of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective, simpler, and cheaper device of this character is produced than is now in common use.
It sometimes occurs in the employment of the ordinary scraper that it is required to he used in large V-shaped grooves or channels, and on oval or pyramidal surfaces, which cannot be so rapidly and perfectly scraped thereby as is desirable. The cutters also frequently 7 become dulled and need sharpening at a time when the use of the implement cannot be dispensed with for that purpose.
My invention is designed to obviate these difficulties and objections; and to that end I construct the scraper with two quadrangular adjustable and detachable blades, arranged upon one headstock, at an obtuse angle to each other, and in such a manner that when one of the cutting-edges becomes dulled another may be readily substituted without stopping to grind the blade.
In the drawing,Ais the bait; B, the shank; O, the head-stock, and d d the blades or cutters, which are square, and provided with a cutting-edge, 6, upon each of their four sides. The head-stock is formed with two laterallyinclined or beveled faces at its outer end, to which the cutters are attached by means of the screws F, in such a manner that they may be readily adjusted thereon at any angle, or revolved to bring a new cutting-edge into position, as required.
In Fig. 2 the scraper isrepresented with the cutters adjusted to scrape either an elevated or depressed surface, and in Fig.1 the cutting-edges are represented as being on the same plane, or the blades adjusted for use on a level surface.
By inclining the blades laterally and at equal angles to the shank B the gain in the out of each is offset by the other, causing the implement to work evenly and with much less power than would otherwise be required.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- The box-scraper described, consisting of the shank B, provided with the head-stock O and cutting-blades d d, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose spccified.
ALBERT W. TUOKERMAN.
