My invention consists, first, of a match-lighter, composed of a strip of paper or other material, part of which is sanded or otherwise roughened, and part left plain7 so that the whole may serve the double purpose of an available match-lighter and advertising-card; second,.my invention consists in the combination,` as described hereafter, ofthe sand-paper, the advertising-card, and a piece of mica or glasswhich protects the printed matter of the said card. i v j In order to enable others to make myrinventionfI will now proceed to describe the manner of carrying it into e'ect. On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specificationliigure 1 is a front view of my improved match-lighter.

Figure 3, a sectional View of a modification.
Figure 4, a front view of another modification of my invention.
On reference to figs. 1 and 2, which represent the cheapest modification of my invention, A, is a strip of sand-paper, a portion of which in the middle is cut away and discarded, leaving a central opening` covered by an advertising-card, B, which is pasted or otherwise secured 'to the back of the sand-paper. The match-lighter', thus manufactured, may be nailed at'the corners to a. wall or otherA object in the neighborhood of a match-box, and thus serve -the twofold purpose of an advertising-card and available material `against which to rub theA matches to be lighted. If desired, the opening in the strip of sand-paper may be first covered by a thin piece, C, of mica or glass, theAgadyegtisingfcard adjusted to the same, and the whole covered by a strip of paper, D, pasted at the back, the printed matter being thus protected by a glass or mica. The front face of the advertising match-lighter may be ornamented by painting, printing, or otherwise marking thereon borders or other designs, or a border of thin metal may be applied, as shown in iig. 4. I prefer to make the sandpaper stripA and advertising-cards of separate pieces, pasted together in the manner described, but they may consist of one piece, to one part only of which sand or emery is secured, theother part remaining plain for the reception of the advrtisementfwlich may, it' desired, be printed `after Ythe application of the sand or emery to the other part of the paper. i
Without confining myself to any precise form of sand-paper strip or advertising-card, I claim as my invention, and dcsirewto secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of mannfaeture-v -1. A match-lighter, consisting-oi` strip of paper or other material, part of which is sanded or otherwise roughened, andupartmleft` plain, furthe purpose specified.
2. The combination, described, of the sand-papegtheadvertising-card, and strip of glass or mica.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name t'o this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
