Description

M. ENGLISH.
Ore Washer.
Ptented Aug. 28, 1849.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
MICHAEL ENGLISH, OF LAGRO, INDIANA.
GOLD-WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,676, dated August 28, 1849.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MICHAEL ENGLISH, of Lagro, in the county of \Vabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Separating Gold and other Ore from the Earth in which It is Found; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the machine ready for use. Fig. 2 end view of the cylinder.
Like letters denote like parts.
Figure A represents the box made of Wood or metal it is about 2 feet 9 inches long, 2 feet 2 inches high and 1 foot A inches deep inside, B screen cylinder made of heavy wire Wound in a spiral-form about 1/16 of an inch apart and supported by 8 ribs having recesses on the out side for the reception of the wire coil, the ribs are supported at one end by the cone C and at the other end by the rim H Fig. 2, C cone made of cast iron with a spiral rib. On the inner surface this rib is about 2 inches wide from the cone toward the center and runs from the wire cylinder to the end of the cone at S. D crank. E dashers fastened to the cylinder, they are about 2 feet long and 2%- inches Wide and should pass within about 3 inches of the bottom of the-box, the object of these dashers is to keep the water agitated so as not to allow the dirt to settle in the box but pass out of the space between the cone and box at F, G hopper through which the materials to be washed or separated pass.
The arms I are sunk back from the rim H so as to admit the lever end of the hopper to pass into the cylinder.
IIaving thus fully shown the construction of my machine for separating gold and other ore from the earth in which it is found I will now proceed to describe its operation, the ore and earth are shoveled into the hopper and fall into the cylinder, the box A is filled with water until it reaches the opening at F and there should be a constant supply of water running into the box for the purpose of carrying off the dirt, the water may be supplied by means of a hydrant, pump, or any other usual mode, the cylinder is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow which by the action of the screw cylinder carries the ore and dirt forward the small particles passing through the Wire cylinder into the box Where the gold settles and the dirt is carried out by the water at F, the large pieces of ore and stones are elevated by the screw in the cone C and pass out the end at S into a box or basket Where the gold and other substances can be separated.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of the above described machine, what I claim as new and In invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the helical revolving screen with the dashers upon its periphery, and the conical frustum with a screw therein, by which arrangement the larger and smaller particles are separated and the latter washed at one operation, all of which is arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
