Description

UNITED" STATES ANDREV BAILEY, O
PATENT EEICE.
F JEFFERSON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN CATTLE-PUMPS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. Lt, dated August 2, '1839.
To all whom, may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW BAILEY, of the town of Jefferson, county of Ashtabula, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Cattle-Pump, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
First, I make a cylinder, A, of wood or copper, twenty eight inches in diameter, and twelve inches in length, with an aperture in the bottom about eight inches square, stopped by a valve, B, of lead and leather, fastened down on one side to open and let the water in when the platform and piston-rod rise. I then make a piston-head or follower, C, of wood, two inches thick and one inch less in diameter than the cylinder in which it plays. On the bottom of the follower is a metal plate nearly the same size of the cylinder, with leather between the edge of that and the cylinder to keep it tight.
D is a hollow piston-rod, fastened to the follower O, ruiming up through the follower, and on or near the top of which is a tub or trough, N, to contain the water; also atrough, M, separate from the platform and piston-rod, which may be used in preference to tub N which is attached to the piston.
E E is a platform playing up and down in a timber-frame, WV, hung on a pivot at F, and
A through which the piston-rod D passes, and is fastened at G by bolt and joint, so as to play as the platform rises and falls.
H is a post standing perpendicular from bottom of well, running four feet above platform, with a pulley at I, and sufficient weight at K to raise platform, piston-rod, and follower.
The operating principle of this pump is this: From annexed View the platform is up. sequently the follower or piston-head is at the top of the cylinder, and as the creature comes onto the platform its heft gradually settles platform, piston-rod, and follower or pistonhead, all at the same time, and forcingvthe water into the hollow piston-rod at valve R, of marble, passing through the piston-rod into trough at M, or tub at N; and in case I choose to cause the water to pass out of cylinder at valve S and up a tube in post H, passing out through spout Pinto trough N or M, it may be done without altering or affecting the principle of its operation.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hollow piston-rod D, in combination with the trough N, platform E E, and the piston-cylinder and Valves of the ordinary pump, all as herein described, and in case I choose not to have the tub N attached to the hollow piston, in combination with it and the platform, but use trough M separate from it, it may be done without affecting the claim or principle of its operation.
ANDREV BAILEY.
