JACOB ADOLF MOLLER, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOP FOR POWDER, COLOGNE, OR SAUCE BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 667,550, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed December 3. 1900. erial No. 38,510. (No model.)
'[b rtZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAcoB ADOLF MOLLER, .lr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Top for Powder, Cologne, or Sauce Bottles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for regulating the discharge of such material as powder, cologne, or sauce through the tops or caps of receptacles and to so assemble and construct the required parts that they may be conveniently operated and easily kept clean.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle having the improved top applied, the openingin the top being shown uncovered. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the central portion of the top of the receptacle shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
A represents a receptacle, which may be of any character, and B the top therefor, the top being preferably screwed upon the neck portion of the receptacle A. This top B has a central opening 10, and a flange 11 extends downward from the margin of the opening 10, as shown in Fig. 2. A washer 12, having a central opening 13, is fitted around the flange 11 at the opening in the top, as illustrated in Fig. 2. This washer 12 is made of cork or like material and may be polygonal in general contour or circular.
In connection with the washer 12 a slide 14 is provided, which has end movement: beneath the washer 12, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This slide is provided with a recess 15 at the central portion of itsinner end, rendering the inner end portion of the slide 14 bifurcated, and in one position of the slide namely, its out-er position-the recess 15 is brought in registry with the opening 10 in the top and the opening 13in the washer 12. The slide 14 is provided with flanges 16, which extend upward from its sides, and these flanges 16 engage with the side surfaces of the washer 12, as shown in Fig. .3, and tend to guide the slide 14 in its inward and in its outward movement. The slide 14 is provided with a handle l7, which extends out through an opening 18, produced in a side of the top 13, and preferably the handle 17 terminates at its outer end in an upwardly-extending flange or thumb-piece 19, so that the slide may be readily and expeditiously moved inward or outward. The slide 14 is held in proper position and is guided at its bottom by introducing a washer 20, of cork or like material,in to the top B,the washer 20 being made to fit snugly to the inner wall of the said top, and this lower washer 20 is provided with a central opening 21, which registers with the opening 13 in the upper washer 12 and the opening 10 in the top, so that when the slide 14 is drawn outward, as illustrated, the space between the members of the bifurcated portion of the slide will register with the abovementioned openings 10, 13, and 21, and the contents of the vessel or receptacle A may be readily discharged through the opening 10 in the top. When the slide 14 is pushed inward to -its full extent, the flange 19 will be quite close to the outer face of the top B, and the plain surface of the slide 14 will close the outlet-openings in the several washers and in the top proper.
It will be observed that when the parts are assembled in the top and the top is screwed upon the receptacle A the several parts within the top are firmly held in operative position.
It will be observed that the cork washers between which the slide has movement tend to clean the slide from any substance that may adhere thereto and that by removing the top from the receptacle the various parts may be conveniently removed from the top and the whole be thoroughly cleaned.
Although I have shown the washer 12 as polygonal, it may have other shape, and the slide 14 instead of being made bifurcated may be provided with an opening of desired shapeas, for instance, a circular opening to register with the opening 13 in the cap of the receptacle.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A top for receptacles, provided in its upper portion with an opening, a washer having an opening in line with the opening in the top, a washer below the upper washer and having an opening registering therewith, a slide having an endwise movement through the opening in the top and between the two washers, said slide having an opening adapted to register with the openings in the washers and in the top, and guides carried by the slide for engaging with one of said washers, substantially as specified.
2. A top for receptacles, provided with an opening in its upper portion, having an inwardly-extending marginal flange, a suitable Washer having an opening which receives the said flange, a lower and larger washer provided with an opening adapted to register with that in the smaller washer and that in the top, the lower washer being in frictional engagement with the inner surface of the top, and a slide having end movement through an opening in the top and between the two washers, said slide being provided with an opening which is adapted to register with the openings in the washers and the opening in the upper portion of the top, and guides carried by the said slide and arranged for engagement with opposite sides of the upper washer, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the top of a receptaole having an interior thread produced at its bottom and a central opening in its up per portionavhich openingis surrounded byan inwardly-extending marginal flange, of a suitable washer having an opening which receives the said flange, a lower and larger washer having an opening which registers with that in the upper washer and in the top, the lower washer having frictional engagement with the top at a point above its thread, and a slide having end movement in the top and between the two washers, the said slide being provided with a bifurcated inner portion, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
