LEONIA MABEE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GARM ENT-EDGEv PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,544, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed March 26, 1900. Serial No. 10,262. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONIA MABEE, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Petticoats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to petticoats; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a petticoat with a part broken away, showing my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional View of the lower portion of a petticoat, showing the construction and application of my invention.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a petticoat constructed of any desired material and provided on its outer side with a number of flounces 2, if they are found to be desirable. Stitched or otherwise suitably secured to the lower edge of the petticoat on its inner side is a strip of waterproof material 3, the same extending entirely around the lower portion of the garment and reaching upwardly a suitable distance on the inner side, in which position it is stitched or secured by some adhesive material. Secured around the lower edge of the garment on the outer side is a narrow strip of waterproof material 4:, the same being covered by the lowermost of the flounces 2.
The inner strip of waterproof material 3 is extended upwardly a distance sufficient to receive all dust, mud, 850., which might be stirred up in walking and to keep all such foreign substances from reaching the finer material from which the petticoat is made. The waterproof material can then be washed and brushed, and not being injured by the presence of the dust or mud, 850., the appearance of the garment has not sufii'ered.
sesses two functions.
A garment constructed in accordance with the above principles possesses superior advantages over all others and may be worn without injury from either dust, snow, or mud. The lower edge of the garment is protected from the efiects of usage, as well as from the effects of foreign substances, and may be easily and quickly cleaned without injury to the garment. The waterproof material 3 being stiffer than thematerial out of which the pettiooat is constructed will also hold the petticoat in a proper shape. In other words, said waterproof material pos- One is a protection against dust, snow, mud, or water, as hereinbefore stated, and the other as a stifiening medium to hold the petticoat in the desired shape.
The front side of the skirt, at the upper extremity thereof, is cut away, as indicated by 5, and to prevent the skirt from sagging below the said excision I provide a supportingband 6, the lower end of which is secured to the skirt, the upper end being provided with a suitable loop 7 for the purpose of receiving the belt 8.
I claim As an article of manufacture, an integral full-length petticoat composed of the same material throughout its length and having a broad section of waterproof material sewed thereto on the inner side, and a narrow section of waterproof material secured thereto on the outer side, the said sections inclosing the lower edge of the garment and having their lower edges turned in against the lower edge of the petticoat, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEONIA MABEE.
