FOLDING ORCOLLAPSIBLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,112, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed June 5, 1900. Serial No. 19,109. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. BEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding or Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete speciication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to folding or collapsible boxes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved box of this class, the body and cover of which are each formed of a single blank, which is readily folded into operative form and which is durable and rigid in such operative form. v
The invention consists in-the novel construction and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters denote like parts in the several views, Figure l is a plan view of the blank constituting the body portion of my improved box; Fig. 2, a plan view of the box formed from the blank shown in Fig. 1 and in operative form; Fig. 3, a section of Fig. 2
on the line 3 3 thereof; Fig. 4, a partial View of the formed-up box shown in Fig. 2, showing the corner construction thereof; Fig. 5, a plan view of the blank constituting the cover of my improved box; Fig. 6, a section on the line 6 6 thereof and with the parts in operative form; and Fig. 7, a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5 with the parts in Operative form, with the exception of one of the locking end iiaps, which is shown in extended relative position.
In the practice of my invention, referring to Figs. 1 to 1, inclusive, I provide a box-body the bottom portion of which is shown at 5, the side members at 6, and the end members at 7. Score or crease lines 8 are formed between the bottom member 5 and the side members 6, being parallelly arranged, and score or crease lines 9 are formed between the bottom member 5 and the end members 7, being also parallel and arranged at right angles to the score or crease lines 8. The side members 6 and the end members 7 are provided with a convoluted or otherwise ornamental edge porlines 8, 9, and 13.
tion 10, which edge portions are connected with the respective members 6 and 7 at score or crease lines ll'. I further provide independent cnd flaps 12, which are connected with the side members 6, score orcrease lines `lbeing formed between each ofthe end aps l2 and its respective side member. The end flaps 12 are cut away obliquely at 14 upon their outer corners.
Connected with each side of each of the end members 7 is a locking-tongue l5, which is cut away obliquely at one corner at 16, the said corner being that which is next adjacent to the obliquely-cut-away corner 14 of the adjacent end Hap 12 when the parts are in the relative position shown in Fig. 1. Each of the locking-tongues 15 is provided with a member l5a at the outer edge thereof. The score or crease line 11 at each end of the blank is projected at 11a to separate the locking-tongue member l5 from the respective lockingtongue l5, and each of the locking-tongue members 15a is substantially triangular in form, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the base or shorter side of said triangle being in a creaseline 17, which is arranged between the respective member 15a and the fluted edge portion 10 of the adjacent end flap 7.
In folding the box-body above described the side members 6 and end members 7 are raised into a rectangular position with relation to the bottom member 5, and the end flaps 12 are turned inwardly each at right angles with the side member 6 with which the same is connected and in engagement with the adjacent end member 7. In folding the side and end iaps as above described they are folded relatively upon the fold or crease The edge portions 10 upon the side and end members are now turned downwardly upon the crease-lines 11 into parallelism with the bottom member 5, and the end portions of each of the edge portions 10 of the side members 6 are provided with notches 18, the edge portions l0 of the end members 7 being provided at their ends with locking-tongues 19, which are now engaged with said notches 18, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Each of the locking-tongues 15 is now folded downwardly at right angles with its respective member 15aL and is then passed between the adjacent end flap l2 and end mem- IOO ber 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the member 15n of the respective locking-tongue 15 being folded downwardly outside of the respective side member G upon the crease-line 17. This locks the end members 7 and side members G firmly together, the lockingtongues 15 and the members 15 thereof be- 'f ing, it is manifest, folded about the corners of the box, the locking-tongues 15 passing between the end members 7 and the end flaps 12. The result of this final association of parts causes, it is manifest, a reinforcement of each corner of the box-body, and with the lockingtongues 15 in the position last described the locking-tongues 19 and slots 18 are securely locked together, preventing relative detachment thereof and assuring final rigid and durable operative form of the box-body as an entirety. The edge portions l0 of the side and end members of the box-body extend inwardly thereof parallel with the bottom mem-I ber 5 and form a decorative edge for the box, as is customary in candy and other boxes.
Referringr particularly to Figs, 5, 6, and 7 I have shown at 20 the top member of the cover of my improved box, which is provided with side members 21, there being crease or fold lines 22 arranged parallelly between said top member and the side members. The top member 2() is also provided with end members 23, there beingr score or crease lines 24 arranged between said end members 23 and the top member 20 and extending parallelly at right angles with the fold or crease lines The end members 23 and side members 21 are connected by sector-shaped reinforcing-Webs 25, which are provided each wit-h a central radial score or crease line 26, each of which score-lines 26 springs from the point of intersection of the respective side member 21 and end member 23. I furthermore provide supplemental end members 27, each of which is connected with one of the end members 23, there being crease-lines 28 arranged at the line of connection of said end members 27, rangingin parallelism and at rightangies to the crease-lines 22. Two crease- lines 29 and 30 are provided for each of the sectorshaped webs 26, respectively, at the line of connection of each web with the next adjacent end member 23 and the next adjacent side member 21. The crease-lines 30 thus form extensions of the crease-lin es 24:, and the crease-lines 29 thus form extensions of the crease-lines 22. The side members 21 of the cover carry supplemental side members 31, there being a score or crease line 32 formed at the lille of connection of each of said supplemental side members 31 and the respective side member 2l. Each of the supplemental end members 27 is provided at either side with a laterally-directed locking-tongue 33, there being a crease-line 34 formed at the line of connection of each locking-tongue 33 with its respective supplemental end member 27 said crease-lines 34 having each the same line of projection as one of the crease-lines 22.
The locking-tongues are provided with heads 33, and the supplemental side members 31 are provided with two elongated slots 34, through which the heads 33 of the locking-tougu es 33 are passed in the operation of folding the box-cover into operative form, as hereinafter described. In thus folding the box-cover herein last described into the operative form the side members 21 and end members 23 are raised into positions at right angles with the top member 2O and at right angles one with the other, each of the sectorshaped webs being folded centrally upon its creasedine 26 and folded upon its crease- lines 29 and 30, whereby it is brought into engagement with the inner side of one of the end members 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 7. The supplemental side members 31 are now folded downwardly each into engagement with the side member 21, with which the same is connected, and the supplemental end members 27 are folded downwardly into engagement with the inner sides of the folded sectorshaped webs 25. The box-cover is now in operative form, with the exception of locking the same, which operation is performed by passing the heads 33a of the locking-tongues 33 through the elongated slots 3l in the supplemental side members 31. 'lhis operation locks the supplemental end members 27 to the supplemental side members 31, and thus locks the end members 23 and side members 2l, with which the said supplemental end and side members are connected, firmly together, also locking the sector-shaped webs 25 between the supplemental end members 27 and the end members 23, It is manifest that with the parts in this vfinal association the cover is provided with double end portions comprising one of the -end members 23 and one of the supplemental end members 27 and with double side portions, each comprising,
one of the side members 21 and one of the supplemental side members 31. Itis further manifest that double corners for the box are provided, due to the folding of the sectorshaped webs 25 upon the'crease- lines 29 and 30, and that the ends of the box are reinforced at the corners by the folding` of the sectorshaped webs 25 centrally upon themselves upon the crease-lines 26. Then the box-cover is thus folded into operative form, it may be readily passed into position upon the boxbody herein initially described to close the same, and it is manifest that the box-body and box-cover are each simple in construction, embodying each a simple blank which may be readily cut, stamped, or formed from cardboard, paper, or other substance, and that each may be readily folded into final operative form or association of parts, constituting a durable and rigid box member.
I do not limit myself to the specific form and arrangement of parts of my improved box, but reserve the right to vary the same within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I
IOO
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved box-body formed of a single sheet or blank with crease or score lines for folding, and consisting of the bottom member 5, the side members 6, the end members 7, said side and `end members being connected with the sides and ends of said bottom member, the foldable edge portions l() connecting with said side and end members, the end flaps l2 connected with the end portions of the side members, the locking-tongues 15 connected with the sides of the end members, and provided with members 15a which are connected with the end portions of the edge portions 10 of the end iiaps 7, said edge portions of said end flaps 7 being provided with locking-tongues 19, and said end portions 10 of said side flaps 6 being provided with slots 18 which receive said locking-tongues 19, said end flaps 12 being adapted to be turned inwardly of the box-body, and said lockingtongues 15 to be passed between the same and the end members 7, whereby said members 15@L of said locking-tongues 15 engage the outer sides of the side members 6 of the boxbody.
3. The herein described improved box, comprising a box-body provided with a boX- cover formed of a single sheet or blank with crease or score lines for folding', and consisting of the top 20, side members 21, supplemental side members 31, end members 23, supplemental end members 27, said supplemental end members being provided with locking-tongues 33, and said supplemental side members with elongated slots 34, said side members and end members being connected by sector-shaped Webs 25, whereby when said supplemental side members are folded upon said side members and said supplemental end members are folded upon said end members, and said sector-shaped webs are folded inwardly between said supplemental end members and said end members, said lockingtongues may be passed through said elongated slots to lock the box in operative form, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of June, 1900.
