SAMUEL A. BIEBERSTEIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO RUDOLPH SOHMITZ AND SAMUEL V. SHRODER, OF SAME PLACE.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 666,953, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed September 17, 1900. Serial No. 30,339. (No model.)
To all 1071 0772, it ntmy concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. BIEBERSTEIN, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Supporting and Self-Adjustable Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to self-supporting trousers; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view showing my improved trousers in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion, showing the difierent parts connected together. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper portion, showing the different parts disconnected; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upper part, showing one of the sides, the fastening device being detached. Fig. 6 is a view from the rear. Fig. 7 is a View showing the portion of the inner side. Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the fastening devices. Fig. 9 is a view showing the inner side, the different parts being secured together. Fig. 10 is a view corresponding to Fig. 9, showing the garment enlarged.
Heretofore garments of this class have been constructed with an adjusting device at the rear and on the outside or else entirely omitting such a useful feature. WVhenever the garment having such a device at the rear is adjusted to a smaller size, the cloth at that place is overlapped and wrinkled, making the garment appear uncouth.
My invention consists of a garment having an improved means for adjusting to different sizes and avoiding entirely the disadvantages above mentioned.
In construction the trousers are provided with side pockets open also at the top, and to the corners of the pockets is secured one member of a clasp, preferably .the hook, and the other members are secured to the waistband of the garment. A series of these are secured to the waistband for each hook, so that by engaging the hook with those in front 50 the garment is enlarged and by engaging it with those farther to the rear the garment is made smaller. The overlap caused by this adjustment is taken up on the inside, and a neat appearance is thereby maintained at all times. Other advantages will appear in the following detailed description.
-As shown in the different views, the garment is made even and entire at the rear, omitting the notch usually provided whenever the adjusting means is located at that part of the garment.
1 denotes a section of cloth of the same material as the garment and which extends inside the front portion 2 of the garment and is secured thereto at 3. In the portions 1 and 2 on each side is formed'a pocket 4, and the outer portion 2 is not connected to the portion 1 at any point except at 3. Secured to the upper corner of the portion 2 is a hook 4, forming one part of a clasp, and secured to the waistband of the garment at suitable intervals is a series of eyes 5, with which the hook 4 is adapt-ed to engage. The eyes 5 are spaced a suitable distance from each other, so that when the hook 4 is engaged with the foremost one the garment will be enlarged, and when the hook 4 is engaged with one to the rear the garment is made smaller, the overlap or folds being taken up on the inside of the garment and being formed in the portion 1.
The portion 1 at the right is provided with a tongue 6, which is adapted to engage with a button or other fastening device 7, secured to the portion 2, whenever the garment is made smaller; but whenever the garment is enlarged there is no overlap in the portion 1 and the tongue 6 is disengaged from its button 7.
On the portion 1 atthe left of the garment go is a series of buttons 8, with which the tongue 9 is adapted to engage as the garment is made larger or smaller. The hooks 4 on bothsides of the garment should be engaged with corresponding eyes 5, thereby insuring uni-.95 formity on both sides.
Whenever desired, a belt may be worn, covering the eyes 5, and thereby concealing all parts of the fastening device.
I claim- 1. A pair of trousers, having means on both sides for adjusting to different sizes, the
ICC
portions 1 which overlap being taken up on the inside and forming the inner sides of the pockets, a tongue 6 carried by one of the said portions 1 and adapted to engage with a button 7 carried by the body of the garment, and buttons 8 carried by the other portion 1 and adapted to be engaged by the usual tongue 9 carried by the body of the garment, substantially as specified.
2. A pair of trousers having the usual pockets constructed to open at the sides and top and a portion 1 of the body of the garment on each side projecting inside the front portion of the body of the garment and forming the inner part of the pockets, fastening devices for securing .the outer portion of the SAMUEL A. BIEBERSTEIN.
