To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHARLES R. HARRIS and ARTHUR H. ANDREWS, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FoldingBeds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in in tal folding beds, the object being to produce a metal bed capable of being folded in a small compass and when so folded shall present a neat and attractive appearance.

With this end in view our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved bed. Fig. 2 is a side view of same in a partially-folded position. Fig. 3 is a view of the bed completely folded, and Fig. 4 is a detailed view.

A represents our improved bed, and it comprises a head-section B, a foot-section C, and a rectangular folding spring-supporting frame D, all of said parts being constructed of suitable metal and of any approved design. The head and foot sections B and O are each provided with a pair of inwardly-projecting supporting-arms 1 1, to which are pivoted the respective ends of the folding frame D. The outer ends of arms 1 l are supported by means of legs 2, eachof which is secured at its upper end to the post carrying one of the arms 1, while the lower end of each of said legs is adapted to rest upon the floor at a point removed from the post to which it is secured. Hence it will be seen that not only a firm support is provided for the outer ends of arms 1 1, but a support for maintaining the head and foot sections in an upright position is obtained whether the bed be open, folded, or in any intermediate position.

The rectangular frame D is composed of two U-shaped sections hinged together, the.

side members of one section overlapping the ends of the corresponding side members of the other section, which permit free upward movement of the adjacent ends of the sections and which hold the sections horizontal when the bed is open. The central hinge connections between the two sections of the frame D are formed by means of a rod 4, which passes through the overlapping members of the side rails of both sections and carries an angle-iron 5, which latter forms a central support for the spring-mattress when the bed is folded.

The frame D is pivotally connected near its ends to the arms 1 l by rods 6, which latter pass through the arms 1 1 and side rails or members of the respective sections of frame D at points near their upwardly-bent ends. The overlapping members of frame D, which constitute the hinge-joint, are assisted in supporting said frame in a horizontal position by the outwardly-projecting fingers 7, which latter are arranged in pairs on the bent ends of frame D and bear upwardly against crossrods 8, carried by the head and foot sections of the bed, respectively.

The spring-mattress 8 is of ordinary construction and is secured at its ends to the respective ends of frame D, and by bending the ends of the latter upwardly, as shown, we are enabled to support the mattress 8 in a plane above that of the side members of said frame D. On the spring-mattress 8 is located a second mattress 9, which latter is preferably formed of two sections, each of which is of a length approximately equal that of one of the sections comprising the frame D, and hence it will be apparent that when the bed is folded one section of mattress 9 will be carried by one section of frame D, While the other section will be carried by the other section of said frame.

Near the upper ends of the posts of headsection B are secured the ends of a U-shaped rod or bracket 10, from which latter is suspended a pair of portieres orcurtains 11. This rod 10 projects over the bed sufficiently to enable the portieres 11 to be so drawn as to completely conceal the bed when in its folded position, as shown in Fig. 3.

The bed may be easily and quickly folded by first exerting a rearward pull on the top of the foot-section 0 sufficient to break the hinge-joint of frame D and then pushing against said foot-section until the bed is completely folded.

If desired, the head and foot sections may be firmly locked together when in their folded positions by means of a spring-catch 12, as shown in Fig. 3.

After the bed has been folded the portieres or curtains 11 are drawn to conceal the bed from view.

Having fully described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a folding bed, the combination with a head and foot sections having inwardly-projecting arms, of a sectional framedisposed said inwardly-projecting arms and havingportions normally bearing, outwardly beyond said pivotal connections, against the head and foot sections.

2. In a folding bed, the combination with head and foot sections having inwardly-projec-ting arms, of frame section-s pivoted near their outer ends to said arms and having portions bearing beyond said-pivotal connections against the head and foot sections, the inner ends of the frame-sections hinged together, and m attress-sections on the respective frame sections, one of said mattress-sections overlapping the hinged connection between the frame-sections.

3. In a folding bed, the combination with head and foot sections, each section having a pair of feet at each end, of a sectional frame having overlapping ends and pivoted to said head and foot sections and fingers at the outer ends of the respective sections of the pivoted frame adapted, when the bed is open, to engage the head and foot sections of the bed.
