Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX BTTGER, OF BRESLA, GERMANY.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 665,668, dated January 8, 1901. Application fi1ed January 20, 1900. Serial No. 2,196. (No modal.)
T0 alZ w7w7n it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX BTTGER, merohant, of Tanentzienstrasse 40, Breslau, Germany, have invented some new and usefglImprovements in Fastening Devioes for Boxes;
and T declare that the foliowingis a full and clear description of the same.
The invention relates to a new or improved fastening device for boxes, such as bat-boxes, bonnetboxes, and the 1ike.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the fastening device in its closed position and applied to a round box, and Fig. 2 shows the fastener in its open 01' free position and applied to a square box.
Upon the lid I) of the box et a wire or rod o s mounted in such a manner that it is capable of rotary motion. Both ends of the rod are bent downward to form anms, which embrace the upper part of the body of the box, and the extreme ends of these arms are again bent to form the hooks d, which are capable of engagng With the eyes or ferruies 6. By tnrning the rod 0 in one direction or the other the books are either passed within the ferrules 3, so as to fasten the lid open the box, as shown in Fig. 1, or are withdrawn from the ferrules, so that the 1id may be removed, as represented in Fig. 2.
A handle g, which may be formed by twisting the wire or rod, is provided, so that the turning may be easily effected. This handle Will lie fiat on the top of the box when the fastener is c1osed.
fis a handle, which is linked or attached to eyes formed in the rod or wire c. The eyes are inclined when the hook ends are in engagement with the ferrules, whereby the weight of the box mantains the books in engagement. This handle is attached in snob a manner that the weight of the box tends to maintain the fastener in its closedpositon, and thus prevent accidental opening during carriage.
The fastener may be secured by a padlock or the 1ike, or a cord may be passed through the end of a hook and be sealed.
I daim- In a fastening devioe for boxes, the combination Wth the box and its oover, of ferrules secured to the sides of the box,a wire extending across and hinged to the cover and having downwardly-turned hooked ends for engaging said ferrnies,said wire having a central looped portion forming a handle for tilting the same to swing the hooked ends and having small loops on each side and a pivoted handle engaging said smal1 loops, said small loops being arranged on an incline when the hooked ends are engaging the ferrnles, whereby the weight of the box maintains said hooks in looking position, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two wtnessgs.
' MAX BOTTGER.
