With this obj eat in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts, as
will be hereinafter described and claimed,
and in order that the invention may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which'-.-

Referring to the drawings in detail, where like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts, 1 designates a car of the usual or any preferred type, and 2 the standards at opposite sides of the usual dooropening 3. Secured to the inner sides of the standards 2 are strips 4, having their inner edges 5 tapering inward and downward .and forming between the inner faces of the standards and the flange-strips 6 downwardly converging grooves to receive the door, as hereinafter explained, one of the strips 6.extending,. preferably, the full height of strips 4 and the other only about a foot above the floor of the car, as shown in Fig. l.
The door comprises two sections 7 8, the latter being considerably wider than the former,
the meeting edges of the two being hingedtogether, as shown at 9, and secured to said sections, near their lower edge, is a flexible strip 10, adaptedto prevent grain from escaping from the car by working its way under the door. The outeredge of each section tapers downward and inward to correspond with and fit snugly in the tapering grooves formed by standards 2, strips 4, and flange-strips 6,

the arrangement being such that the door as, 'a whole must be raised sufficiently high to clear the short flange-strip 6 in order that it may be conveniently and easily inserted in said grooves and permitted to slide downward until it'rests upon the floor of the car, as will be readily understood; or it may be removed by bending it inward along the hingejoint in order to withdrawits edges from engagement with said grooves,as will be readily understood.
' To guard against any accidental inward movement or dislocation of the door, the latch 11, pivoted to the strip at above the short flange-strip 6, is provided, saidlatch being adapted to overlap the inner edge of the door and perform the same function at the upper edge of the door as said flangestrip performs at the lower edge, the downward movement of said latch being limited by lug 12, projecting from the door.
I To render the door absolutely rigid by clamping the two sections together in the same plane as though integral, vertical strips 13 and 14 are secured, respectively, to sections 7 and 8 at their outer sides, and bolted or riveted to strips 13 is a V-shaped metallic bar 15, having an opening 16, adapted to fit over the pin 17, secured to one of the strips 14 in any suitable manner, this relation of they parts being made permanent by means of a hook 17 engaging an aperture in'pin 17 outward of the V-shaped bar or brace 15, said hook being carried by a chain 17*, bolted, as at 17 to the brace-bar 17 said brace-bar increasing the strength and rigidity of section 7 of the door, while the V-shaped bar 15 performs the same function for section 8 of the door. r
The cams or eccentrics 18, pivoted to the standards 2 above the door, bear upon the upper edge of the latter and prevent upward movement of the 'same and are adapted to be thrown to an inoperative position, asindicated by the dotted arrows, when'it is desired to raise and open the door and remove it from position. When thus arranged and the latch 11 thrown off, it is obviousthat by raising the, door bodily the height of the short flangeplaced therein and resecured in such position by restoring latch 11 and cams or eccentrics 18 to the position shown.
The door is connected by a chain 19 with the standard 2, forming the short groove, in conjunction with the short flange-strip G and interposed strip at, and when the door is open it is swung pivotally around with the chained end as a pivot and rests against the inner side of the car in the customary manner.
From the above description it will be apparent that we have produced a break-joint grain-door for cars possessing the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of invention, and it is to be understood that various changes may be made in its detail construction or arrangement without departing from the spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination withacar having the usual door-opening, tapering strips 4, secured to the standards of the door-opening, flangestrips 6 secured to and projecting inward of the tapering strips, one of the flange-strips equaling the length of the tapering strip and the other extending upward from the bottom of the flange-strips only a short distance, a catch 11, pivoted to the strip 4-, above the short flange-strip, a door of tapering form to fit against the tapering strips and between the door-opening standards and the flangestrips, and consisting of two parts hinged together, a lug 12, projecting from one doorsection to support the pivoted catch, when eugaging the door, and devices carried by the dooropening standards above the door, and bearing down upon the latter, substantially as described.
