JOSEPH E. OHANTLER, OF EMPORIA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JUSTIN R. SODEN, OF SAME PLACE.
FAQSTENER FOR COLLAR-PADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,464, dated December 25, 1900.
Application filed August 4, 1900- Serial No. 25,916- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH E. OHANTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Collar-Pad for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pad-holding at-- tachments for horse-collars; and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective means for maintaining a pad in one constant position relatively to a collar disposed thereon in the usual manner and firmly engage portions of the pad in such manner also that a part of the improved device can be detached in the event of breakage without injuring the pad or necessitating supplementing an old pad with a new one and thereby prolong the life of the pad by simply supplying a new part similar to that which may have become disarranged or broken and attaching it to the main part of the improvement which engages the roll of the collar.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a collar and pad, showing the improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of a portion of the collar and pad and one of the improved devices. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the improved devices.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1v designates a springclip which conforms in shape to and is intended for removable application to the roll of a horse-collar. The inner end of the said clip is provided with a bolt-seat 2 to removably receive a screw-bolt 3, and detachably connected by the said bolt tothe clip is the bifurcated end 40f a U-shaped bendable clampingarm 5 to embrace the front edge of the pad 6 and having spurs 7 extending inwardly from opposite portions thereof to take into the said pad and form a fastening for the arm which is withdrawable or disconnectible at any time found necessary or desired without mutilating or injuring the pad, thereby permitting the same pad to be worn for a considerable horse-collar, the inner end of the clip being length of time and without rendering the same unfit for further use at the time the attachment breaks. It will be observed that by simply removing the bolt 3 the arm 5 can be readily detached and another similar device substituted therefor. This afiords a great sav ing in the expense usually attending this class of devices, in addition to the successful operation of the pad, in view of its maintenance at all times in one position relatively to the col lar. Moreover, it will be seen that the bolt 3 also forms a pivotal connection between the pad and the collar through the intermediate parts of the improved device, and thereby either the collar or the pad may have freedom of movement to a limited extent with obvious advantage and relieve both of the said devices from strain during certain exertions of the horse in pulling. It is proposed to use as many of the improved devices in connection with a single collar as may be found necessary, and it is obviously apparent that changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A device of the character set forth com prising a spring-clip conforming in shape and removablyapplied tothe roll or fore-Wale of a provided with a bolt-seat, a U-shaped bendable clamping-arm to embrace the front edge of a pad and having the inner terminal of the front member bifurcated to'embrace the opposite ends of the bolt-seat on the inner end of said clip, both members of the arm having spurs extending in opposite directions from the sides of the same adjacent to the pad to transversely penetrate the latter, and a threaded bolt removably inserted through the parts of the bifurcated inner end of the arm member and the seat at the inner end of the clip.
vIn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH E. CHANTLER.
