Description

UNITED STATES FREDERICK P. MANNING, OF BATAVIA, ILLINOIS.
M ETAL PATENT OFFICE.
TANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,421, dated December 25, 1900.
Application filed March 8, 1900.
To all L11/tom it nte/y concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK P. MANV NING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Tank, of which the following is aspeciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in metal tanks; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a metal tank having the greatest durability; second, to provide a metal tank requiring the least amount of work in its construction; third, to provide a tank having no seam running around bottom, and, fourth, to provide a metal tank without seams in its corners. I attain these ob-4 jects by constructing as illustrated in the ac'- cornpanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detailed view in perspective of metal tank as constructed. Fig. 2 is a pattern showing manner in which metal sheets are cut and made up to form tank. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of lock-seam.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The sheets of metal A, the end pieces B, the angle-irons C, the braces C, and rivets U constitute the several parts ot' tank.
In constructing tank I use one or more sheets of metal lock-seamed together until I have required length of tank, as shown by seams O, each seam being hammered down and grooved, as shown by Fig. 3. I prefer to have the metal sheetsA equal in length to both sides and bottom of tank E, Figi; but When necessary the sheets A can be lengthened by lock-seaming two sheets together, as shown at O', thus making the bodyfof tank. The ends B having the folds S are lock-seamed onto the body of tank E, as shownin Fig. 2. The holes N in endsB show where riveted after being formed up, as at U, Fig. 1.
To form up sheets or body E in Fig. 2, bend Serial No. 7,836. (No model.)
up the sides and ends at dotted lines M to a right angle with the bottomlock-folds S in ends B in folds F in body E, rivet at N in ends B, and solder seams O and O and rivets U, asin Fig. 1.
The angle-irons C are riveted around top and bottom of tank E and also at each corner of tank E, as shown in Fig. 1. The braces C' are riveted across top of tank E to angle-irons C to prevent sides of tank E from spreading when filled with liquid.
I am aware that prior to my invention metal tanks have been made in combination with angle-irons. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a metal tank of the metal sheets A A A A, the lock-seams O O O O O joining the metal sheets A A A A, the ends B B lock-seamed onto the sheetsA A A A and having the folds S S S S and the rivets U U U U, the angle-iron C C C C C C C C, the braces C C all substantially as described land set forth.
2. The combination in a metal tank of the angle-iron C C C C C C C C, the braces C' C' the ends B B having the folds S SS S and FREDERICK P. MANNING.
