THOMAS E. MORRIN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ELIZABETH T. MORRIN, OF SAME PLACE.
STEAM-G EN ERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,358, dated December 18, 1900- Applieation filed November 29, 1899. Serial No. 738,643. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MORRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam-generators,
and has for its object to produce a generatorcapable of rapidly and economically generating steam.
In the accompanyingdrawings I have shown a steam-generator embodying my invention.
These drawings are, however, illustrative merely, and my invention is not necessarily limited to the generator shown.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of the generator on line I I of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the arrangement of one of the baffleplates with reference to the tubes. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the generator in half-section, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the lower manifold-chamber.
In the drawings, a represents the casing of the generator, and b the fire-bed or fiIG'bOX, herein shown as an ordinary grate. The tubes 0 c are arranged in two inclined sets, one set communicating at its lower end with the lower manifold-chamber d, and the other set of tubes communicating at its lower end with the upper manifold-chamber e. Both sets of tubes are inserted in the tube-sheet f of the uppermost manifold chamber f or steamdrum. This tube-sheet f is of a thickness corresponding to the thickness of a boilershell having the same radius as the tubesheet. The tube-sheets d and e of the manifold-chambers d e, into which the lower ends of the tubes enter, are parallel to the parts of the tube-sheet f which are opposite to them, (or substantially S0,) being preferably curved on the same radius as the tube-sheet f and preferably of the same thickness as the said tube-sheet. Pipes g connect the steam-d rum or manifold-chamber f with the manifoldchambers d and e, and inclined pipes It (only one of which is shown in any one figure) connect the manifold-chambers d and e with each other.
At about the middle of each set of tubes I provide an inclined baflie-plate 11 to direct the flame and products of combustion. The baffle-plates are not quite as wide as the set of tubes and have free spaces between their outer edges and the outermost rows of tubes.
In each set of tubes I have shown tubes 0', which are larger than the tubes 0 and aid in maintaining the circulation. The tubes 0 are also shown as arranged in pairs of rows, with a passage between each pair of rows, along which a Wounded tube may be removed from the generator without disturbing the others.
When the tubes 0 are used, the side circulation-tubes g may be dispensed with.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a steam-generator, in combination, the steam-drum f, the manifold-chambers d e, the sets of inclined tubes 0 0 connecting the drum and manifold-chambers and the baffleplates 1' located among the sets of tubesand leaving a free open space between the outermost row of tubes and the side edges of the baffle-plates, as set forth.
2. In a water-tube boiler, the combination of two headers or manifold-chambers, a series of parallel water-tubes uniting the headers or manifold-chambers, and a series of tubes 0 parallel with and of larger size than the clined water-tubes connecting the steam- 5 drum to the manifold-chambers, one of the said groups of tubes being shorter than the other and a fire bed or grate b located in the space between the two groups of tubes and a fire door or opening located below the mani- 6. In a boiler, the combination of an upper steam-drum, a manifold located at front of thefi Q-bd and a manifold located at the rear of the fire-bed, a set of inclined groups of Water-tubes connecting each manifold with the steam-drum, inclined pipes h, one at each end of the manifolds, connecting the said manifolds, and inclined pipes g g at each end of the manifolds, connecting the manifolds with the steam-drum.
