Description

(No Model.)
0. P. HIGGINS.
' SEGTIONAL STEAM GENERATOR.
No. 595,829. "Patented Dec. 21, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CAMPBELL P. HIGGINS, OF ROSELLE, NEW JERSEY.
SECTIONAL STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,829, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed March 13, 1897. Serial No. 627,899- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CAMPBELL P. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at B0- selle, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sectional Steam-Generators, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to headers for sectional steam-generators into which the ends of inclined water-tubes are secured and which form the principal steam-generating surface.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a header embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section of the same on the line 7 7, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side view showing the shape, construction, and tube connections; Fig. 4, a front View with the hand-hole covers or plates removed; Fig. 5, a sectional longitudinal View of the front and ends in one separate part; Fig. 6, a cross-section of the same on the line 6 6, Fig. 5; and Figs. 7 and 8, corresponding views of the other or inner part that is connected with that shown in Fig. 5 to form the complete header shown in Fig. 3.
The invention is shown in connection with a header of serpentine form by which the water-tubes are arranged either singly or in clusters in a staggered relative position; and it consists in adapting such a header for use interchangeably with either a series of single water-tubes of large size or with a series of clusters of tubes of smaller size, or both, without varying the shape of the header or interfering with the cleaning, placing, or removal of either kind of tubes through the opposite hand-holes, which are necessarily restricted in size. I
In the present instance the header is made up in two separate parts, as shown at A and B, Figs. 5 and 7, the part A forming one face and two ends and the part B made in trough shape to form the opposite face and two sides, the respective parts being united by welding or otherwise to form the complete header. The face of the part B is made with a series of depressions a a, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, in order to present a face to each tube b or cluster 12 corresponding to the inclination of the latter-when secured, and the hand-holes 0 upon the opposite face A are made in line with each depression, so that any or all the tubes may be accessible for placing, securing, cleaning, or removal, the ends of the clusters of tubes being fully or partially exposed, so as to be accessible and capable of removal through the hand-hole opening, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3.
In order that single large tubes or clusters of small tubes of standard diameters, respectively of four and two inches, may be used interchangeably, the depressions or steps a a are formed in a line at right angles with the center of each tube-opening, as shown on the face view, Fig. 1. This construction provides for the interchange of the tubes and preserves the necessary degree of exposure of the clusters of the smaller tubes to render them accessible for placing, cleaning, repairs, or removal through the tube-opening.
In this invention I provide a serpentine header adapted for use with inclined watertubes either of full size or with clusters of tubes of smaller size, or both, each capable of being interchanged, secured, cleaned, or removed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A header for sectional steam generators composed of a trough-shape part having sinuous sides and a bottom constructed with a series of perforated transverse angular steps or depressions, and a second part having a perforated face and bent ends to fit the trough and secured to it, substantially as described.
2. A serpentine header for sectional steamgenerators, having one of its faces constructed with a series of transverse angular'steps or depressions perforated to receive inclined water-tubes singly or in clusters as shown, said depressions being formed in line at right angle to the center of the perforation or'tubeopening, and the opposite face of the header provided with hand-holes in line with the tubes and through which all of said tubes are accessible for placing, securing, cleaning or removal, as set forth.
CAMPBELL P. HIGGINS.
