UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHN MAHER, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
WATER-TUBE BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,316, dated August 13, 1895.
Application filed April 20, 1394:.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MAHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, county of Bay, State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in steam-boilers, and it pertains more especially to the smoke-box of combined water-tube and fire-tube boilers; and it consists in the arrangement'and construction of the parts with the object of providing a smoke-box that can be attached to a combined water-tube and fire-tube boiler that will greatly increase the heating-surface and at the same time provide more efficient means for Water circulation. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the boiler with a portion of the front broken away for the purpose of showing the arrangement of the water-tubes. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the invention taken upon the line A B, Fig. 1..
Fig. 3 represents a rear perspective view of the invention.
Referring to letters, A represents the cylindrical shell of the fire-tube portion of the boiler, and B is the steam-dome secured to the shell A by means of rivets, (shown at C.)
D is the front head of the shell A, and E is the rear head of the same, and F is the firetuhes. The heads D and E are connected by the said fire-tubes F, which form the fireshell A.
Lrepresents an opening formed in the rear head E above the fire-tubes F and below the water-line O for the purpose of connecting the rear water-leg J by means of rivets represented at O, and a right-angle bend at R, projecting horizontally far enough to provide Serial No. 508,348. (No model.)
suitable space for the smoke-box D, thence projecting down to M, where the outer sheet of the said leg J is, and riveted to an angleiron J, which forms'the support for the said Water-leg J, whereby a large and efficient opening is procured in the shell A at L for the purpose of increasing water circulation, and at the same time the right-angle bend formed in the upper end of the water-leg J from R to L greatly increases the heatingsurface.
N represents a pipe secured to an opening formed in the lower portion of the boilershell A at E, and secured thereto by means of rivets, (shown at P.) The opposite end of the said pipe N is secured to the rear waterleg J, and has exit therein by means of an opening formed at F in the said water-leg J and secured thereto by means of rivets, as shown at Q, for the purpose of providing additionalWa-ter circulation and providing also has a hand-hole provided in its lower portion at L for the purpose of removing sediment accumulated therein.
U represents the water-tubesplaced on an incline with their front ends elevated and connected to the inner sheets of the water- 1 legs J and H.
G are the grates, and H the apron, while '1' is the fire-box door.
Mis the fire-box. The said fire-box M and the water-tubes U are inclosed at the sides by the asbestos walls shown at N N.
W and V represent plugs provided in the outer plates of the front and rear water-legs J and H for the purpose of removal, with the object of removing or repairing the watertubes U.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a combined water tube and fire tube ICO boiler of a cylindrical shell having circular ing formed in the said rear circular head, and heads, fire tubes, connecting the said heads the smoke box provided by the rear water in combination with the front and rear water leg and its right angle bend, substantially as legs made rectangular in form and extending described.
5 the full width of the said cylindrical shell, In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my I5 the rear circular boiler head provided with signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
an opening between the waterline and the JOHN MAHER. fines, the full width of the said head, the right Witnesses: angle bend formed on the upper end of the G. R. MONCKS,
IO rear water leg and secured to the said open- L. M. SANDERS.
