n:Nrrnn .TATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CULBERT CRAIG, OF TORONTO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOI-1N CHARLES CRAIG,
OF KINMOUNT, CANADA.
LOCK AND LA TCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 664,315, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed May 10, 1900.
T a/ZZ whom. it 11m/7) oon/corn,.-
Be it'known that I, GEORGE CULBERT CRAIG, of the city of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Latches and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to door locks and latches, and has for its object to reduce friction of some of the moving parts by applying thereto ball or roller bearings.
My invention consists in providing the bolts and a reciprocating frame with ballbearings,as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Figure l is a-plan of the interior parts of the lock and latch, showing ball-bearings. Fig. 2 is a side view of the face-plate, showing a lug integral therewith to retain the ball in the slot of the latch-bolt.` Fig. 3 is aplan of the cover or cap removed from the lockcase, Fig. 1. Fig. 4L is a plan of a portion of the latch-bolt detached from the lock to show the ball-recess and Fig. 5 is a like View of the locking-bolt, showing a ball in the recess.
1 is the lock-case, and 2 the latch bolt,
' which is supported in an aperture in the faceplate 3 and by a post 4 cast with the lockcase, to which post the covering-plate la, Fig. 3, is secured by a screw in the usual manner.
5 is a frame having a pin 6, entering a hole in the `latch-bolt, and said bolt and frame reciprocate combinedly. '.lne rear part of frame 5 is supported on. the locking-bolt 7, and a spring 8 by reason of its pressure against an arm portion 9 of said frame slides said frame and projects the latch-bolt. The tappet 10 when rocked by turning the door-knob withdraws the latch-bolt in the usual way. The frame 5 being pivoted by pin 6 to bolt 2, said spring keeps the rear part of frame 5 against the top edge of the locking-bolt and reacts the locking-bolt when lifted by a key after projecting the bolt.
To reduce the frictional-contact oi the sliding frame and the latch-bolt 2, said frame has an arm 16, the upper side of which is provided with a groove or raceway 11, in which rotates a ball 12. 13 is a lug or bearing cast Serial No. 16,179. (No model.)
with the lock-case and above said groove to keep the ball in the raceway, so that when the frame is reciprocated the ball-bearing will reduce the sliding friction of the frame.
'Fo-reduce the sliding friction of the latchbolt 2, the bolt is provided with a slot 14,
A which forms a raceway for a ball 15, inserted therein, and the face-plate 3 has a lug or cheek 17 in contact with said ball to retain the ball in the slot While traveling therein.
The rear portion of frame 5 is notched out at the lower edge and forms a raceway 1S, in which is placed a ball 19, and said ball is secured in the raceway by a bar 20, which bridges the raceway longitudinally, so that when the latch-bolt and vl'ralne are reciprocated the ball will reduce the friction, and when the key is used the ball will reduce the friction of the locking-bolt. The locking bolt 7 has a cavity 2l, facing the cover-plate, in which cavity is a ball 22, and the coverplate is provided with a raceway 23, in which the ball runs to reduce the friction of said bolt when moved by a key.
The tumblers 25 are shown in dotted lines.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a lock and latch such as described, the frame 5, having an arm 16, provided with a raceway 11, and a ball 12 therein, in combination with a lock-case having alug or bearing 13 above said groove to keep said ball in place, as set forth, and for the purpose described.
' 2. In a lock and latch such as described, the frame 5, having a rear portion notched out to form a raceway, a ball in said raceway bearing on the top edge of the locking-bolt, and a bar longitudinally of said raceway and secured to said frame, to keep the ball in place, as set forth, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name to this specification this 23d day of April, 1900.
GEORGE CULBERT CRAIG.
