COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH. V
SPECIFIGATION fQrming part of Letters Patent No.'293,24,8, dated February 12, 1884,
Application filed January 4, 1883.
(Modem to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a face view of my lock, with the face-plate removed and unlocked. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing same in a locked position;
This invention has relation to improve j ments in door-locks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as
will be hereinafter more fully set forth an 7 claimed.
whereof the lower guide-pieces, G and H, are
separated, or so arranged as to form an opening, K, into the horizontal slideway itbOiG the key-hole L.
In the oblique slideway is seated the oblique reciprocating bolt N, the length of which is such that when it is fully projected there will be an interval, m, above it equal to the breadth of the slideway F between its upper and lower guides. When the bolt is withdrawn obliquely upward into the case, the interval m will be filled by theupper end of the bolt.
In the horizontal slideway is seated the locking-slide P, the front end of which, when said slide is withdrawn, does not project into the oblique slideway, but is flush, or nearly'so, with the guide-piece E thereof. The slide P is recessed from below upward, to receive a vertically-adjustable bar, S, which is held in adepressed position by a spring, V, in the slide. The bar S is provided with one or more end studs, a, which project downward to engage the perforationsb in the guidepieces G and H, or either of them. ranged in pairs, one in front of the other, so that one will receive the stud a when the slide is withdrawn, and the other will receive said stud when the slide is projected or in the looking position. A notch or bearing, 0, is made 'in'the bottom of the slide P, to engage the bit of the key.
In the lower rear portion of the oblique bolt N is made a notch or bearing, d, which engages an arm, e, of the knob-shaft g, sothat when the sh aft is turned the bolt can be raised and withdrawn or lowered and projected, according to the direction of rotation. "When the oblique bolt is projected, it is fastened in position by moving the locking-slide P forward over the upper end of said bolt. This is accomplished by means of the key, which, when turned, first raises the bar S, disengaging its stud or studs, and then pushes the slide forward, when it becomes again fastened by the descent of the bar and reengagement of its stud or studs. A reverse movement of the key will withdraw the slide, relieving the oblique bolt, which can then be withdrawn by means of the knob-shaft and arm. The toe of the bolt is obliquely beveled, so that it will be pushed back automatically, when it engages an obliquely-beveled bearing of the keeper.
Reciprocating bolts operated by means of arms on the knobspindles engaging in notches or recesses in the bolts have been heretofore used in looks, and diagonally-moving bolts being old, I do not claim either of them, broadly; but v Having described this invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a door-lock, the oblique reciprocating bolt, having its opposite ends beveled, where by the said bolt will rise automatically in closing the door, in combination with the knob-shank and arm engaging the notches of the bolt, substantially as specified.
2. The door-lock herein described, consisting of the case having the communicating ob The perforations b are arliqne and horizontal slideways, the oblique In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein reciprocating bolt, having its ends beveled, presence of two witnesses. and the horizontal lockin -slide over the key- T T T hole, the knob-shaft, ancl its arm engaging a A} DERSOB HOLLAA 5 notch or bearing of the oblique bolt, all com- I Witnesses:
bined and adapted to operate substantially as WV. M. PYLEs,
specified. R. P. B NDY.
