UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. COOPER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
GARMENT-FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,212, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed Jul 9, 1900. Serial No. 23,003. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fastening Devices, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention has reference to a device for securing parts of a garment to another part or parts connected with one garment or other article to another part or article.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the device whereby the same may be formed of one piece of wire, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure l is a top view of a blank formed of a piece of wire shaped to form the device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the blank, showing in broken lines the form into which the blank is bent in forming the device. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the finished device, showing a cord secured to the same. Fig. 4 is a rear view, and Fig. 5 a transverse sectional view, of the device.
In constructing the device a wire of suitable dimension is stamped in suitable dies to form the broad concavo-convex part b, and the part c is also made of concavo-convex cross-section by subjecting these parts to a blow or blows between suitable dies. The
part a is pointed at d, the part c is now bent over the part b, the portion 0' is compressed by a blow, and the part 0 extended diagonally outward from the face of the part b. The stamping of the parts b and 0 gives to them a spring temper.
The pointed part a is now bent over so as to touch the end of the part 0 whereby the spring-tempered part 0 forms a latch. The device may have a string, a cord, or parts of a wearing-apparel, or other article passed into the space e between the latch c and the part b, such as the cord f, and the part a. may be secured in another part or to another article, the material of which, extending above the end of the latch 0 will be firmly held against withdrawal from the part a by the end of the latch 0 Hose may by this device be secured to other garments, a waist may be secured to a skirt, a hat band or string may be secured to a garment, and the device may be used for many other purposes. The two adjoining concave surfaces of the parts band a secure a firm hold on any article inserted between them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a device of the nature described, formed of a single piece of wire, the combination with the central concavo-convex part b and the bent-over, pointed part ct, of the doubled and compressed portion 0 and the diagonallyextending concavo-convex latch 0 whereby articles may be secured together, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN P. COOPER.
