IMPROVED VEGETABLE-CUTTER.-

To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. SCHWARTZ, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Vegetable-Cutter; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the same. My invention consists of a plate, to which is secured a stationary knife, in combination with a plate which may be so adjusted as to regulate the thickness of the slices cut trom the vegetables, the instrument thus constructed being cheaper than and notso liable to get out of order as those in ivhich an adjustable knife is used. In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and'operation, reference being bad to the accompanying drmving, which forms apart of this specification, and in which-- i 1 Figures 1, and 2 are longitudinal sections of my improved vegetable-cutter, showing the parts in different positions.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 1-2, fig. 1; and
Figure 4 an inverted plan view.
To each side of a board or plate, A, is secured a strip, B, one endoi' which projects beyond the edge of the plate; and betweenthe projecting ends of the strips fits a plate, A, which vibrates on pins 0 a, passing through the strips near the ends of the same. The adjacent edges of the plates A A are a slight distance apart, and
are inclined, as shown in the drawing, and to the upper side of the plate A is secured a plate or knife, 01, the 7 cutting edge of which is' parallel to and almost in contact with the edge of the plate A. The knife d is secured at such an angle that its cutting edge is a slight distance above the face of theiplate A In a-curved cross-piece, D, the opposite ends of which are secured to the side-strips B B, turns a. set-screw, F, the upper end of which is secured to but turns freely in-aplate, e, attached to the under side'of the plate A The cabbage or other vegetable is cut by sliding it over the plates so as to bring it against the projecting edge of the knife 0?, the thickness of the slices which are cut from the vegetable being regulated by turning the set-screw F so as to V increase or diminish the distance betvvecn the edges of the plate 'A' and the knife all By the use of an adjustable plate, A, instead of an adjustable knife, ashas heretofore been the practice, the knife may be secured more firmly in its position, the instrument will not be so liahleto get out of order, and may be made at a less expense.
I claim as my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent The plate A, with its knife 01, in combination with the adjustable plate A and the'set-screw F, or its equivalent, the whole being constructed and operatingsubstantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN M. SCHWARTZ.
