TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be, it known thut 1, WILLIAM T. ROUND, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Gun-Hammer Gauge; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to bee full,-clea r, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specificatiom-and represent, in-
Figures 1 and 2 face views in difi'erent positions, and in -Figure3 an edge view of same.
This invention relates to an improvement in a gauge for ascertaining the form and length of hammer requiredupon a fire-arm. Inthe construction of fire-arms, it 'is essential that the hammer 'strilce properly on to the cone. To fit a hammer to thus strike isa job requiring no inconsiderahle skill, and occupying more or less time in fitting. To overcome the difiicirlties attending this class of'work, and render it a simple and easy matter, is the object of my invention, which consists iii the peculiar construction of the gauge, which may be fitted to the Iock and adjusted to the cone, and when SOl adjusted forms a gauge from which the hammer may be properly formed. V I s p In order to the clear understanding or" my invention, as well as to enable others to constrnct the same, I will proceed to a description thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is a plate formed to fit on to the stud which projects from the face of the lock, and is fitted into the plate B, so that the said plate B will turn freely thereon, as from the position in fig. 1 to that in fig. 2, and through the plate 13 is formed a-slot, a, concentric to the plate A, and through which a set-screw, 0 passes, and by the turning of which-the plate B may be bound firmly on to the plate A, as 'seen in fig. 3. D is another plate forming the hammer end, and fitted on to the plate B, as seen in figs. 1 and 2, and in which a slot, d, is formed, and through which a screw, E, passes, and turned into'the plate B, firmly secures the two plates D and B together, the two plates being of the proper form required for the hammer, but of adjustable length. a
This completes the construction. Its operation is as follows: First place the gauge upon the lock, the stud passing through the plate A; then extend or contract the part D, turning the plate B upon the plate A until the gauge sets properly uponthe cone; then set the two screws 0 and E, and bind the three parts firmly together, and the exact pattern for the hammer is formed. Thus it will be seen that the gauge is readily adjusted to hammers of diflerent length and different stroke, so that no experimenting or cutting and fitting are necessary in the construction of the hammer.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa 3 V A gun-hammer gauge consisting of the plates A B and D, constructed and arranged so as to beadjusta'ble, substantially as and for the purpose set fort I WM. T. ROUND.
