Description

H SZZJUZ- /27 e iron 0m Wwf/1%@ mwdfmf@ HIRAM S. BLUNT', OF NEWA YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 75,241, dated MarckilO, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN METRONOMES.
ilge rlgehnle rsfcmh in in tlgcs iettts n'trnt mit uniting gmt nf the arme.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. BLUNT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metronomes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
To enable the public to understand the nature of my invention, and those skilled iu the mechanic arts to construct and operate the same, I willdescribe it, as follows, to wit:
Figure l is a perspective drawing of the machinery employed to operate the index 0l upon the face or dial, or otherwise arranged to indicate the number of beats in a bar of music.-
Figure 2 is a perspective drawing ot the exterior of the case, showing the index d, dial D, and eseapement or pendulum P, which regulates the measure of time to suit the different music.
A A A A" are metallic rings or sections of a drum, which may be formed in one piece if thought best, provided, however, that the pins orstops n'n n n 11. are arranged in such a manner that any number of beats or stops above two is indicated by the index. The drum A, or sections thereof, is firmly secured to the transverse shaft C, which is enlarged at B, and grooved so as to receive the cogs or teeth upon the clock-gear G G', which are operated by the wound spring S.
The shaft C moves longitudinally to the right or left, through the tube B', and is secured at the proper stopping-points by means of the dog or spring-catch o, which fits into the grooves 1 2 3 4 around the axis or shaft C. If I wish to decrease the number of beats in a bar of music, I move the adjustable shaft C and rings A A A A" until the spring-catch o falls into groove 1, and the index CZ will indicate two beats or 4stops during one of its revolutions. Then change the position of the toothed plates or drum A A" until the springcatch falls into groove 4, by simply shoving the adjustable shaft C to the right. The in dex will distinctly point out six stops or beats during one of its revolutions. thus showing an increase of four, and so on, to suit any desirable number. I
Therefore, what I claim as novel and useful, and what I wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The adjustable rings or plates A A A A", scparnted or united, in the form of a drum, with pins or stops n n n 1t n'sccured to and forming a part of the movable shaft C and I5, in combination with the index or hund fi, and with or without rthe dial D, for the purpose of indicating the number of beats in a bar of music, in the manner substantially as described, and shown in the drawings.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name inthe presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM S. BLUNT.
